EE has relayed a significant update to its customers regarding a major shift in its network slated for the upcoming year.
The telecom giant, in alignment with other UK providers, has disclosed its decision to phase out the aging 3G network across the country. This transition is aimed at creating room for the accelerated rollout of 4G and 5G services, signaling a pivotal evolution in mobile connectivity.
EE Bids Farewell to 3G
The retirement of 3G, a technology introduced in the early 2000s, is a collective decision by UK providers to usher in a new era of faster and more robust mobile internet capabilities.
As part of this move, users with outdated phones incapable of supporting 4G or 5G will experience a cessation of internet access. As for EE, the 3G data has become insufficient for modern demands, often struggling to handle even basic tasks like a WhatsApp message.

Assisting Vulnerable Customers in the Transition
According to The Sun, EE has already outlined its commitment to supporting vulnerable customers during this transition. The 3G network provider has pledged to provide eligible users with a complimentary upgrade to a 4G-ready mobile phone. Alternatively, those desiring flexibility in choosing their handset can avail themselves of a discounted pay monthly plan.
Strategic Rollout: Initial 5G Locations Revealed
Amidst these network advancements, EE has disclosed the initial locations set to receive the benefits of superior enhanced 5G connectivity post the 3G retirement.
The locations include Belfast, Darlington, Uxbridge, Dartford, Solihull, York, Dagenham, Hayes, Harringay, and London. This strategic expansion aims to provide users in these areas with an enhanced and seamless mobile experience.
Preserving Basic Connectivity: 2G for Calls and Texts
While bidding farewell to 3G, EE reassures its customers that basic connectivity for calls and texts will still be preserved through 2G, which will remain operational. This ensures that users can continue to make calls and send texts even with older 3G phones.
EE's decision to retire 3G aligns with industry-wide changes, with Vodafone, Three, and Virgin Media O2 also planning similar moves in the coming years. Vodafone is set to initiate the dismantling of its 3G network starting with Glasgow in early 2024, followed by Three at the end of 2024, and Virgin Media O2 in 2025.
How to Prepare for the 3G Switch Off
To facilitate a smooth transition for users, EE has provided a step-by-step guide to prepare for the 3G switch-off:
Text "Handset" to 150 to check if your phone supports 4G or 5G and receive upgrade advice.
Ensure that the 4G network is enabled in your phone settings.
Confirm that 4G Calling is turned on in your phone settings.
Activate 'Wi-Fi Calling' in your phone settings.
Seek expert advice on the 3G switch-off by visiting the EE website or consulting a store representative.
EE's proactive measures and strategic 5G expansion signal a future where advanced connectivity becomes the norm. It's only a matter of time until people adapt to the changes that are set to happen by March 2024, Computer Weekly writes in its report.
