Here is your reminder that starting this December 2023, Google will begin the massive account deletion it will hold, and it will target inactive accounts that have not been used for two years already. Different reports and users already call this the "Great Google Account Purge," and if you know about an account that you have not used in the said time, there may be a need to revisit it now.
This new focus of Google is part of a cost-cutting measure it does to free up storage, data, and other information it holds, with the company providing notices for this.
Google Account Deletion is Now Here Starting this December
Ars Technica issued a well-timed reminder over the "Great Google Account Purge" that is slated for December, and it alerts those who have not been in touch with Google for around two years now. The report said that there may still be time to save the account from getting deleted by the company, and it will center on a "phased approach" in the said process.
First off, Google will delete the accounts that users created and never used again. However, that does not mean that other users are safe from getting their accounts deleted.
It is important to note that this will only apply to personal accounts made on Google's platform, particularly those that do not have any subscriptions to its services.
Login, Check Your Email to Avoid Google Account Deletion
If you are looking to save your account from deletion, log in via Gmail or Google's website now, then head on over to your inbox to check for emails regarding a notice that talks about account deletion.
Users only need to sign in once every two years to keep the accounts and for Google to recognize them as active, including logins via Android phones.
Google's Account Deletion and Purge Through the Years
Deleting inactive accounts is not new to Google anymore, as more than two years ago, in 2020, the company also announced a similar take where it took down said users who are no longer using it. This centered on the Google accounts which are used for Gmail, Drive, Photos, and other apps, with the files seeing their removal from the platform as well.
Two years later, Google is back at it again in deleting accounts of its users, and the company announced this earlier this May, claiming that their accounts and files are facing its removal this December 2023. The company did not specify the exact dates of when it will delete the said accounts, but it already provided emails to those that they flagged as being inactive.
More than seven months after Google's announcement, the time has come for the company to fulfill the purge of the inactive accounts that use their services now. There may be some time left to keep Google from deleting your account, but that remains unknown, especially as the company may already have started its process of account deletion for personal accounts.
