Amazon's AWS Unveils New AI Chips, Four Times Better for Training Models

AWS' re:Invent ushers in a new era for AI chips.

The latest Amazon Web Services (AWS) re:Invent conference in Las Vegas has paved the way to introducing its latest developments in the world of artificial intelligence, with new AI chips promising better capabilities. The main focus of Amazon's AI chips presented its goals in the future where they are going all-in with its new processors promising better capabilities to train AI models.

Like the significant in-house chip development shift amidst the pandemic, AI's popularity has also led to companies developing their take on processors meant to run the top technology of today.

The re:Invent conference sure gave the world a lot of updates and developments from the renowned Amazon Web Services, and this paved the way for its announcements of the AI chips coming for all. According to Amazon, its two new chips are meant to create a more sustainable future, offering its "most powerful and energy-efficient chip" which the company built.

First off, there is the Graviton4, and it is an Arm-based chip that offers the energy-efficient AWS processor, offering 30 percent improvements in computing and 75 percent more bandwidth than its previous mode, Graviton3. This chip is meant to run trained models for companies, as part of its services.

Amazon said that the Graviton4 is already available for interested customers, offering broad workloads including running its Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2).

Four Times Better in Training Models

On the other hand, there is the Trainium2, and as the name suggests, this is meant for training AI models which promise four times better and faster training compared to the first-gen Trainium chips. Amazon said that this new chip is available "to be deployed in EC2 UltraClusters of up to 100,000 chips," to train LLMs and foundation models (FM).

Amazon's Foray into AI Tech

While it is unimaginable for an e-commerce platform to deliver its take on AI, Amazon poised itself to be a technology company, and the company is putting in massive investments toward the development of this experience. The so-called "Olympus AI" was reportedly under development and training, with Amazon pouring in massive funds for this project.

Its goal is to provide its take on generative AI, rivaling against the top names in the industry now, OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Bard.

However, these latest investments and releases do not mean that Amazon has not yet released its take, as advertisements on the platform have a generative AI tool meant to improve product shots.

With Amazon's recent layoffs in the Alexa department speculated because of its shift towards generative AI, the company is looking for more growth in the future. Following Intel and NVIDIA's announcement of AI chips, Amazon Web Services unveiled their take on two processors meant for training models and running the said models for various aspects of the company and its customers.
