Instagram's Reels, the platform's answer to short-form video content, initially introduced the ability to download publicly viewable videos in June. However, this feature was confined to US mobile users.
In a recent report by TechCrunch, Adam Mosseri, Instagram's head, announced the global rollout of this feature, making it accessible to users worldwide. Now, anyone on the app can effortlessly download public Reels directly to their devices, enhancing the accessibility and reach of creative content.
Seamless Download Process For Public Reels
The download process for Reels is designed for simplicity. Users can initiate the download by tapping on the Share button, streamlining the experience. This user-friendly approach aims to encourage more users to engage with and share Reels content across diverse platforms, fostering a more interconnected and engaged community.
Distinctive Watermarking and Music Integration
According to Engadget, the downloaded Reels will feature the iconic Instagram watermark, accompanied by the account's username. This is akin to the watermarking strategy employed by TikTok for downloaded videos. The distinctive watermark ensures that the original creator's identity is preserved.
Of course, it's geared towards content authenticity and acknowledging the creative minds behind the Reels.
For Reels scored with original music tracks, the downloaded content will retain the accompanying audio. However, a notable distinction is made for Reels using licensed music as background.
In such cases, Instagram will strip the audio, aligning with copyright regulations. This approach reinforces the platform's commitment to respecting intellectual property rights while fostering a vibrant and creative community.
Empowering User Control
In alignment with user privacy preferences, Instagram provides the flexibility to control download settings. Users can manage their download options by navigating to Reels and Remix under Privacy in Settings.
By toggling off "Allow people to download your Reels," creators retain control over the dissemination of their content, striking a balance between sharing and privacy.
How to Stop People From Downloading Your Reels
There are users who want to see their videos shared across Instagram. However, some people prefer their Reels to be private. If you're the second one, just do the steps that SamMobile wrote below:
- First, record and edit the video you want to make for a Reel.
- From the bottom right of your device's screen, click Next.
- Click More Options
- Scroll down until you see Advanced Settings. Tap it.
- Again, scroll down further but this time click Allow People to Download Your Reels. Disable it if you want people to unsee your Reels.
- Turn on or off the option to download your public Reels.
- Finally, click the back button. It's located on the top left of the screen. Tap the Share button at the bottom.
It should be noted that Instagram users below 18 years old will see this feature as disabled.
