Hyundai has recently unveiled the Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center Singapore (HMGICS), positioning it as a crucial player in its future mobility vision.
The high-tech electric vehicle factory is equipped with a new "smart urban mobility hub" concept, featuring a highly automated flexible production system that integrates innovative production methods, moving away from traditional conveyor belts.
All About the HMGICS of Hyundai
The Hyundai facility, operational since early 2023 but only formally opened on Tuesday, underscores the brand's commitment to sustainable and innovative mobility solutions, marking its determination to lead the way in the electrification era over the next 50 years.
As part of Hyundai's broader ambition to become a 100-year company, HMGICS is set to play a pivotal role alongside the Ulsan EV factory as an innovation pillar.
Singapore was strategically chosen as the location for Hyundai's first industry-changing smart urban mobility hub. The seven-story, 86,900 m2 facility seamlessly integrates into the Jurong Innovation District urban landscape and the broader Singapore smart city ecosystem.
According to the company, it has the capacity to manufacture up to 30,000 electric vehicles annually, making it a key contributor to Hyundai's global electric vehicle production.
The HMGICS employs an advanced manufacturing approach that emphasizes collaboration between people, robotics, and artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
Focusing on a human-centric manufacturing model, the facility incorporates digital twin Meta-Factory technology to swiftly adapt to changing customer demands and production requirements.
Urban Innovation Hub
At the grand opening ceremony, Euisun Chung, Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair, stated, "HMGICS is an open and connected urban innovation hub that encourages and embraces creativity and collaboration. It seeks to redefine the very concept of manufacturing."
He highlighted the careful consideration given to meeting the diverse needs of Hyundai's customers, combining manufacturing expertise with cutting-edge technologies to establish a new manufacturing paradigm.
"We thought hard about how to meet the diverse needs of our many customers. By combining our manufacturing expertise and the latest cutting-edge technologies, the result is this Innovation Center - a new paradigm of manufacturing," Chung noted.
The facility currently produces the IONIQ 5 and the fully autonomous IONIQ 5 robotaxi. The lineup is set to expand, adding the IONIQ 6 to its portfolio of models to be built on-site next year.
Apart from manufacturing vehicles, HMGICS will function as an experimental ground for the development of upcoming mobility solutions, such as Purpose Built Vehicles (PBVs), underscoring the company's mission to push the boundaries of mobility innovation.
