Google's Project Iris is Underway, with the Pixel Watch Soon to Control VR Headsets

Wear it, then use it as your VR controller.

Instead of using more peripherals for your AR and VR headsets, why not something that you wear all day? This may be the ideology that Google has with the recently discovered patent filed in the US, one that leverages the Pixel Watch as an accessory to the VR.

Soon, should Google get a chance to develop and release it, the Pixel Watch may serve more than its purpose as a phone accessory, as it will see additional features that will allow it to control VR headsets.

A new filing by Google via the US Patent and Trademark Office reveals a new feature it aims to integrate into the Pixel Watch that will help control VR devices right on the wearable. Here, Google detailed what the smartwatch may be able to do for users in their use of dedicated wearables, with the company not detailing which technologies would it be compatible with.

Wareable claims that this would be under the Google Glass' comeback, and it is more famously known as Project Iris which saw its cancelation and return in development.

The patent filing detailed several controls that the Pixel Watch may deliver which include launching apps, capturing images via the headset, receiving images via the wearable, controlling gestures, and more via the wearable.

Apart from this, it was said that future releases like the Google Glass 3 and/or the Project Iris will see its reliance on the Pixel Watch for VR control integrations for users. The headset will switch controls between the Wear OS UI and the XR controls if its cameras detect the presence of the Pixel Watch, offering an easier way to access the wearable and navigate what it brings for users.

Google's Project Iris is Coming Soon

Last year saw the first clear indications that an upcoming development from Google is set to deliver a new wearable that will follow its previous take on AR devices. This is with the iconic Project Iris which Google kept under wraps, with its secret development of the AR headset among the anticipations of the public from the internet company for what it looks to deliver.

It was also mentioned by succeeding reports that apart from the AR headset wearable that wraps around one's head, Google is looking to create more devices that will help add more accessibility and features to it. These are in the form of wearables, with Google set to create new rings and bracelets that would help make them all the more portable, and easier for users to equip and use when needed.

Earlier this year, the news surrounding Project Iris claimed that it was canceled by the company, with Google looking to focus more on AR software, but was later revoked by insiders stating that it is now part of its focus. It was said that under Project Iris, Google's plans to deliver a wearable accessory that can control VRs is coming, with its patent pointing out to the Pixel Watch, hopefully delivering the real deal.
