Good Bye, Clyde! Discord Kills its AI Chatbot After Almost a Year of Testing on the Platform

Starting next month, Clyde will no longer be available.

Earlier this year, there were massive AI integrations, and one of them was Clyde, Discord's take on the machine-learning technology employing it to be the social platform's chatbot. However, the world will soon say their goodbyes to Clyde as Discord is killing the AI chatbot starting next month, with the tech powered by OpenAI's API no longer seeing the new year.

In a recent update by Discord via a support note, Clyde will be deactivated starting December 1, with the company saying goodbye to the AI chatbot in all of its integrations. Clyde is best known to be accessible via direct messages, group DMs, or server chats where users only need to mention "@Clyde" on the social platform to get started and enact the conversation.

Clyde became popular because of the OpenAI integration after the company pushed for its API availability to developers, for the tech industry to use.

It was not stated in the support note why Discord opted to shut down Clyde, but there are several speculations like the one from The Verge, where it regarded that the platform may reintroduce the chatbot as a Nitro-exclusive feature.

Discord Clyde: Gone After A Year of Testing

In less than a year, Discord has pulled out its AI chatbot powered by OpenAI's tech from its platform, but it is important to note that Clyde was an experimental venture by the company. This may mean that Clyde was meant to test the waters for Discord's AI integration via the app, especially as there is a promise of new experiences for the public coming soon.

All About Discord's Venture into AI

Back in March, Discord introduced one of its advancements and ventures towards the world of artificial intelligence, with the company delivering Clyde to the world, an AI chatbot that users may summon at any time they want via the chats. Since then, the AI has been under a beta testing phase to test out its capabilities and what it has to offer, powered by OpenAI's API.

It is widely known that there are several AI bots and assistants available on Discord, and these were made by users and other developers who use the social platform's API.

However, the iconic Midjourney AI also started its operations via Discord, with users interested in using it doing so via the chats where they create prompts and get the content via its community.

While AI is no longer new to Discord, the company's development into it saw its massive integration via Clyde, the assistant who is always there and ready to take on any questions or conversations from users. It is now time to say one's goodbyes to Clyde, with Discord killing off the AI chatbot after less than a year since it was introduced, no longer seeing 2024.
