X Launches "Early Version" of Audio, Video Calling Feature

Some users can now enable the newest feature.

Elon Musk, X's chief technology officer and owner, has revealed X's newest feature, audio and video calling for some users, Reuters reports.

The newest feature is reportedly described in the post as an "early version" that users can choose to enable or disable the feature and choose who to allow audio and video calls from.

Musk's quote post from the verified user 'DogeDesigner' showed a screenshot of the feature showing that users can choose to allow audio and video calls from either or all of the people in their address book, people they follow, and verified users.

'DogeDesigner' posted on X that for the feature to be accessible to users, they will need to update the application and go to its settings, wherein the feature will be under privacy & safety and then direct messages.

Engadget reports that after opening X, some users are shown a popup that reads, "Audio and Video calls are here!" The popup also includes information on selecting who may call and other instructions on how the functionality reports.

'DogeDesigner' has already posted a screenshot of them using the feature, praising its video quality by calling it "pretty impressive."

X's Audio and Video Calling Accessibility

Techcrunch reported back in September that the audio and video calling feature will likely be a premium feature wherein it was first confirmed by X's CEO Linda Yaccarino. A tech veteran-turned-investor revealed the likelihood of the feature being a premium-only feature, Chris Messina, inside the X app's code.

The code reportedly warned users to "subscribe to gain access," calling the features "audio and video calls... a premium feature."

The Verge states that it remains unclear whether or not non-Premium users can use the feature and how accessible it is for other premium users.

X as an "Everything-App"

X's newest feature is reportedly another push for the social media platform to be a "super-application" that supposedly will offer a range of services from messaging and social networking to peer-to-peer payments.

X owner Elon Musk has previously shared his plans, according to a Techcrunch report, transforming the old Twitter into an "everything app" where users could subscribe to their favorite creators, watch videos, express their thoughts - including in 25,000-character long posts, upload funds, send payments, and even perhaps store cash in high-yield savings accounts.

Reuters reports that the feature was teased back in August, wherein Musk stated that a phone number would not be required from the users for audio and video calls.

X's newest feature will reportedly be available on Apple's iOS, Google's Android, and personal computers.

Currently, various new features have been either introduced, tested, or teased by X, with the latest being a 1$ yearly subscription that launched in the Philippines and New Zealand for posting, liking, and replying to posts, with the subscription being called a "Not A Bot" subscription.
