Many have dropped support for Apple's CarPlay, but not Porsche, as the company is focusing on this experience to be one of the main features of its infotainment system. Not only that, Porsche is also expanding more on the presence of Apple's CarPlay on its cars, integrating more car features that would bring a more intuitive experience for the display.
Various companies have dropped CarPlay support in the past years, as well as those announcing its departure in the future including GM, Tesla, and more.
Porsche: CarPlay Remains on its Cars, Also Expanding Features
Ars Technica recently showcased an interview with Porsche's Cyril Dorsaz, principal product manager at Porsche Digital, with him explaining the importance of CarPlay and media in their vehicles. A previous update from Porsche integrated vehicle functions and controls to the CarPlay interface, as it would make drivers and riders' experience easier instead of switching back and forth.
The German car company under the Volkswagen Group released its "My Porsche App" earlier this year, and it aims to provide a configurable experience that could control the vehicle from an Apple device. It also integrates with Apple Maps which would allow local searches, adding favorite locations, and more.
Porsche also offers a Siri integration for voice commands whenever driving.
Why Does Porsche Keep its Support for Apple CarPlay?
Porsche wants a connected experience between the driver and the car, offering an experience that they are already familiar with when using their Apple devices.
"And again, the goal for us is that customers, when they're not in the car, they are using the iPhone, iPad, MacOS, Apple Watch, they are very familiar with this UX, UI. That's why they love Apple CarPlay, and that's why we went with this very familiar Apple UI," Dorsaz claimed.
GM, Tesla, and MORE without CarPlay
One of the most surprising changes in modern cars and electric vehicles now is dropping Apple CarPlay support, with many companies either pulling out or planning to remove it from their offers. This includes the likes of General Motors, with the company known for committing to a Google-built infotainment system for their cars, removing that of Apple.
However, GM is not the only one.
There is also BMW and Tesla, with these companies previously claiming that integrating Apple's CarPlay into their infotainment systems is not a priority for now.
CarPlay support for Tesla was removed, as the company prioritizes developing its system, but is incorporating Apple's AirPlay to play music wirelessly to its electric vehicles.
There are only a few companies that are still in league with Apple for including CarPlay in their car's entertainment, and this includes Ford and Porsche. It is safe to say that Porsche is among those iconic ones who stuck their necks out for Apple, with the company's representatives putting massive importance on smartphone and car interconnectedness for a seamless drive and experience.
