Artifact, a news aggregator established by the co-founders of Instagram, is adding generative AI to compete with other social media platforms.
With the new feature, Artifact users may now create their own accompanying graphics utilizing generative AI technology on the site. This update comes after the firm recently announced that its users could submit updates even without links.
How Does It Work?
Artifact attempts to make user-generated material more compelling as users supply striking images that support their narratives. For instance, a person addressing climate change issues may conjure up a beautiful landscape sight, while someone discussing the potential of electric vehicles might conjure up prototype cars.
The Artifact image-generating function, which has been in development for some time, is simple to use. According to TechCrunch, when posting a new post on Artifact, users may hit the plus "+" symbol within the photo frame and choose the "create with AI" option. They may then enter a prompt to create the picture they want, choosing the subject, media (such as an illustration or 3D image), and style (such as pop art or photo-realistic).
To produce the highest-quality results, Artifact uses a fine-tuned, Stable Diffusion model, per GVS. Users have the choice of using the same prompt again to produce a different image or altering the prompt to try again if they are unhappy with the image that was generated.
According to Artifact, creating a picture just takes a few seconds, making it a simple and practical tool for users who want to add aesthetic appeal to their postings.
Competing with Established Social Media Platforms
The larger Artifact goal of tailoring content for its viewers includes this new function. The platform was initially designed as a news aggregator that used AI to identify and surface the most pertinent content. Additionally, clickbait headlines and article summaries were rewritten using AI technology for users.
The "Posts" function, which Artifact just added, enables users to submit their material on the network. With this change, Artifact moves away from its initial news-focused model and in the direction of sites like Threads and X (formerly Twitter). User postings are shared with a larger audience, particularly followers and those who have a similar interest in them.
Although Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, the creators of Artifact, always intended for the app to incorporate social networking features, the addition of the image generator and user content streams signals a substantial shift from its original pitch as an Apple News rival, per Gizmodo.
In January, Artifact debuted as an invite-only platform; in February, it opened to the general public. One of its notable features was its AI recommendation engine, which studies consumers' reading preferences. Though users may tailor their preferred content, Artifact's algorithm still includes some exploration-related information to keep users interested.
Artifact has recently added social capabilities, including user profiles, comments, and the capacity to upload links and text-based content. This extension increases the variety of information accessible on the network and enables content curators to grow their fan bases, emulating the dynamics of X (formerly Twitter).
