X has recently agreed to go on talks with more than 2,000 fired employees who have been laid off without ample notice and compensation, soon to address what happened during the separation. This also highlights a possibility of them getting what they are owed by the company after the abrupt layoffs who many claimed that the company did not provide anything after.
These employees were part of Elon Musk's Great Twitter purge as it tried to save the company money after the tech mogul acquired the entirety of the social media.
X to Talk to 2,000 Fired Employees says Lawyers
X's previous employees who all made complaints against the company after significant layoffs over the past months have successfully reached the company, as shared by Bloomberg in its report. According to the lawyer who holds the case for fired employees, Shannon Liss-Riordan, "Twitter wants to mediate with us in a global attempt to settle all claims we have filed."
According to the memo from the lawyer, X would meet with previous employees with a mediator come December 1 and 2.
It is more than ten months since Elon Musk acquired Twitter, and since then, the notorious layoffs have been apparent in the company as a way to save money and bring back the company's former glory. According to an August court filing, as many as 2,200 employees had individual demands for arbitration.
Will The Employees Get Compensation?
It is unknown whether these talks would involve getting the more than 2,000 fired employees the rightful compensation that they deserve, especially as it would amount to a massive hit on X's funds should it address them all.
According to CNBC, the filing fees for the volume of cases alone already amount to $3.5 million, and this does not include the numbers for the severance they are demanding.
Elon Musk's Notorious Twitter Purge
There is no doubt that Elon Musk changed a lot on Twitter since he acquired it in the fourth quarter of 2022, and among the many changes is the great Twitter purge which rid of previous employees. Amidst the many layoffs from different companies, Twitter was also one to join, with many regular employees seeing themselves without a job, as well as 4,400 contractors.
The social media now known as X has faced massive complaints from previous workers, with many protesting and accusing them of illegally laying off the previous employees without notice.
In 2022, Musk also made a statement on Twitter where he justified the employee layoffs as part of the social media's cost-cutting efforts, also claiming that as much as three months of severance would be provided.
Many fired employees claim that Musk and X have not given them the right notice that they are being removed from the job, and the severance from the company was non-existent. Now, they will see an arbitration that would address the previous issue, after almost a year since the "Great Twitter Purge," without further information if they are to get what they are owed.
