Ring Pet Tag Places QR Code for Easier Tracking: No GPS or Bluetooth?

Find out more about the Ring Pet Tag.

Ring is launching a new pet collar called the Pet Tag that takes a different approach when it comes to pet tracking. Instead of using a GPS or Bluetooth, the QR code would link to more details about the dog aimed to reunite it with its owner.

Ring Creates a New Collar Called the Pet Tag which Uses a QR Code to Reunite Lost Pets with Their Owners

According to the story by The Verge, once a QR code is scanned, the owner then gets a notification and the finder also gets a pet profile revealing more details about the pet and its owner, making it easier to reunite the pet with its owner.

The pet profile, as highlighted by Ring, is capable of including up to five photos along with different important details about the pet like its name, breed, weight, and even its colors. Users can also input other custom details that are important to the pet.

Ring Gives Users Access to a Network of Over 2,500 Animal Shelters Across the US

These important details include unique markers, health conditions, microchip numbers, and the pet's medication details. It was also noted that Ring has partnered up with Petco Love Lost in order to provide users access to a network of over 2,500 animal shelters across the US.

It was also noted that the difference with the Pet Tag by Ring is that it doesn't use any wireless or tracking features. The only addition that's included in the device is a QR code since it doesn't come with any Amazon Sidewalk integration or GPS.

The Pet Tag Would Cost $9.99 and Start Shipping Come October 4 for US Buyers Only

The article by The Verge also clarifies that the new collar isn't anything like attaching an Apple AirTag to a pet. Instead, the tag uses a simple Ring logo with the tagline "always home" while ensuring the pet's details can be accessible to people who find it.

Buyers reportedly have two options on where they can purchase the collar with the first being on Ring and the second being on Amazon. The Pet Tag would cost $9.99 and will start shipping come October 4.

How to Use the Ring Pet Tag Collar

As per its listing on Ring, the custom QR is easy to use and helps users turn the local Ring App community into their search party. It was noted that the tag would only ship in the US and that it is safe and simple.

The way the Pet Tag works is very simple with the first step being pet owners creating the pet profile, which they can update anytime they want. If the pet gets lost, the finder will then scan the QR code and notify the owner or rescuer.

The rescuer can then simply get in touch with the owner and give the update. The process is also said to be anonymous, ensuring users won't have to share any personal details with the finders or rescuers.
