Chinese wind energy company Goldwind marked a noteworthy accomplishment by building the 14.3 megawatt (MW) offshore wind turbine. The company successfully assembled and installed the turbine in 30 hours, demonstrating the advancement of its assembly and installation capabilities.
This speedy wind turbine installation was due to the considerable tactical progress made by Goldwind. These included increased conditions for upending tool disengagement, modular designs, and rotor pre-assembly, which led to a 26-hour decrease in lifting time and a 40% increase in total efficiency, according to Electrek.
Record-Breaking Achievement
The massive 14.3 MW wind turbine is located at the offshore Zhangpu Liuao Phase 2 wind farm in Fujian Province's southeast. China Three Gorges (CTG), a state-owned power enterprise, is developing the project.
In June, CTG announced that the wind turbine installation vessel (WTIV) Baihetan erected the first 13 MW wind turbine at Zhangpu Liuao Phase 2. The developer and wind turbine manufacturer confirmed that the WTIV built the first 16 MW offshore wind turbine at the same site.
Chinese media reported that the 16 MW wind turbine produced 384.1 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity on September 1, surpassing the single-unit record, as reported by OffshoreWIND.biz.

Zhangpu Liuao Phase 2 offshore wind project, off the southeast coast of the Liu'ao Peninsula in Zhangpu, Fujian Province, is the first. The 400 MW wind farm is estimated to produce 1.6 TWh of electricity annually. it will save 500,000 tons of normal coal and reduce yearly carbon dioxide emissions by 1.36 million tons, supporting China's clean energy goals.
Goldwind Seeks Energy Projects Outside China
Along with its successes offshore, Goldwind has been aggressively looking for renewable energy projects abroad. According to local media reports, the Chinese corporation may be studying opportunities in Spain, especially in projects that are ready for development.
Recharge reported that Goldwind's goals go beyond the construction of wind turbines; the company is considering using its own equipment in these projects and developing production facilities in Spain to comply with the EU's Green Deal Industrial Plan.
Goldwind's position as the top global wind OEM in BloombergNEF's rankings in March 2023 highlighted its leadership in the wind power sector, where it had provided 12.7 GW to projects in 2022. This was the first time a Chinese player led the list, and other Chinese enterprises were among the top 10, which was a key turning point.
To gain foreign orders and growth prospects, Goldwind, along with other Chinese turbine industry leaders like Envision and Mingyang, is aggressively expanding outside of its local market. The business move follows the success of Chinese businesses in securing large contracts abroad, notably in the Middle East and India.
Europe's wind energy sector has warned for more than a year that its manufacturers' frail position, with all loss-making last year, leaving it vulnerable to Chinese competitors spurred by their home market's high demand.
