Apple Shuts Down iTunes Movie Trailers App, Will Redirect Users to Apple TV Instead

No more getting all the trailers for upcoming shows on a dedicated app.

The iTunes Movie Trailers app has been a staple to the public for bringing its niche content to access, but Apple has shut down this service to make way for its massive streaming platform as its focus. As the dedicated app for trailers ceases its activities and offers, the Cupertino giant will redirect users to the Apple TV+ app that will give users all the video media content on the iOS.

Apple's iTunes Movie Trailers app and website were recently shut down by the company, marking the end of an era for the public's hub that will open them to the latest Hollywood and what the industry has to offer. While one may think that the iTunes Movie Trailer app is a waste of space in devices, it still offers a unique experience that houses all of the upcoming shows coming soon.

9to5 Mac reported that Apple has begun the process of discontinuing the iTunes Movie Trailers app in the past weeks, with the company pushing them to its dedicated streaming platform instead.

Apple first released the iTunes Movie Trailers app in 2011 which gave users a hub for all the upcoming films to anticipate in the box office, filtered and sorted to give a comprehensive view.

Trailers Redirect to the Apple TV App

However, Apple does not completely kill the iTunes Movie Trailers experience as it lives on in the Apple TV+ app, particularly under the Store tab and "Watch the Latest Trailers" option. Venturing into the now-defunct app will redirect users to Apple TV+'s "Movie and TV Trailers" section.

The difference between the iTunes Movie Trailers app and Apple TV+ is how it sorts the data and upcoming films on its platform, with the streaming app displaying it all for users to see but not filtering it or providing chart data.

Apple's iTunes and Apple TV

Apple's branding of iTunes was the one that stuck out for several generations and it has been the iconic media destination for the company that evolved from music to video. However, Apple decided to rebrand the company's many services including iTunes, first bringing a dedicated "Music" app that transferred everything there, and in 2019, it officially killed iTunes.

Even amidst the pandemic, there is still a version of iTunes that is available for the world to access, and it is through a video streaming platform that also brings charts and data to users.

Still, the company focused its efforts on its so-called Apple TV+, a platform that offers movies and videos for users to watch under a monthly or yearly subscription.

Now, Apple is shedding off its load on the number of apps that are available to bring services to the public and bringing it all under one ecosystem, focusing on its massive streaming platform. The iTunes Movie Trailers app is the latest to be shut down by Apple and brought over to another of its main apps now, the Apple TV+, which would be the home to the previous experience.
