X will soon add a new layer of verification for users under the Twitter Blue service, the controversial subscription platform of the company. This will center on ID verification for users that would require their government ID for verifying their legitimate information, as well as a live selfie that would ensure that they are not using another person's identification card.
The latest discovery by an analyst is shedding light on another Twitter Blue addition for its subscribed users, one that would be essential for the verified checks and other premium features.
X ID Verification is Coming Soon for Subscription
A recent discovery by Nima Owji, a renowned app analyst, claims that X is now looking to ask users for identity verification, centering on the X Premium (formerly known as Twitter Blue). Based on the screenshots that Owji gathered, this first appeared on Elon Musk's profile, showing that it adhered to the ID verification requirements.
It was reiterated that this feature would only be asked from Blue subscribers, with regular users not required to confirm their identity apart from their contact number and email for two-factor authentication and linked accounts.
While verification checkmarks are already looking to verify identity, this will add another layer of information to the public on their profiles. However, users may still hide this ID verification.
Government ID, Live Selfie Required
The requirements for this ID verification are a person's government ID and a live selfie picture which they will need to take with their smartphone camera.
In other apps and companies, these requirements are standard and typically asked of, especially for banks. However, this is with X and its third-party partner Au10tix, who will verify the information and keep its copies said the researcher.
X and its Premium Subscription
If it is still not news to users, Twitter Blue also got a rebrand from the company, and it is now called the "X Premium" service that would center on everything about its subscriptions and verifications. Alongside this, the X Pro (f.k.a. TweetDeck) is now part of X Premium which requires users to pay for its monthly subscription fees to get the experience.
Before the X rebrand, Twitter was already seeing significant changes thanks to its former CEO and present owner, Elon Musk, who changed a lot for the company, with the most significant being verifications. Earlier this year, the massive crackdown against legacy verified accounts that do not pay for subscriptions saw mass removals of their badge.
X Premium brings significant features to users including uploading videos up to 8 GB, long-form tweets, availability to download videos on the platform, the verification checkmark, and more. However, to get all of these features via X Premium, a future requirement of ID verification is needed, complete with one's government ID and live selfie to confirm one's identity.
