Thirty years ago, Super Mario Bros. had its first feature-length movie and was also a live-action adaptation of the famed video game from Nintendo. Now, it is celebrating its 30th anniversary and amidst this, the film is getting a 4K remaster and will be re-released for Japanese theaters to bring the infamous duo of Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as Mario and Luigi.
Super Mario Bros. from 1993 is Getting a 4K Remaster
A report by Crunchyroll highlights a massive remaster coming for the 1993-released Super Mario Bros. live-action movie, with the film getting a 4K remaster in celebration of its 30th-anniversary release.
This specific film performed poorly at the box office and was considered a critical and commercial failure, with Nintendo avoiding the film adaptation of the franchise for a long time after this incident.
Its 30th anniversary in Japan sparked a significant celebration for the movie, now with an upcoming 4K remaster for the film.
This will center on Bob Hoskins' Mario, John Leguizamo's Luigi, and Dennis Hopper's President Bowser. Its main antagonist, President Bowser, lives in an alternate world past the pipes where humans evolved from dinosaurs instead of apes, with the villain looking for a meteorite fragment that could merge both worlds.
90s Mario Movie to Re-release in Japan
The report claims that this movie will be re-release in Japanese theaters come September 15, with the 1993 movie seeing another chance at the box office, but this time, for the fans that it collected throughout the years. It is unlikely that this will also see a release in North America, but it remains unknown if it has plans for the region.
Super Mario Bros. Franchise
The massive commercial success of the Super Mario Bros. franchise has put Nintendo on the map as one of the most successful and influential video game creators from the past until the present. However, there was a significant infamous film from the 1990s which caused many fans and Nintendo themselves to stay away from film adaptations for the franchise.
This is why an announcement back in 2021 about a possible Mario film has shocked the world, especially as its first official casting was Chris Pratt as Mario, with the iconic Jack Black as King Bowser.
The good thing is that when the trailer first dropped, it confirmed that the movie would not be another live-action adaptation, and would be an animated film that Nintendo has put hours on, alongside Illumination.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie became the biggest video game adaptation of all time due to its commercial success and overall good reviews from viewers and critics alike. However, there is still a shadow of its former movie that looms over it, with the live-action flick now celebrating its 30th year since it was released, getting a massive remaster and re-release for another shot at stardom.
