Google's Senior Search Analyst John Mueller Explains Google's Take on AI Content
According to the story by SE Roundtable, Google's Senior Search Analyst has recently shared the results of using AI to write content. He then clarified what effects it would have on the content and how it would be treated by the search engine.
John Mueller is Google's Senior Search Analyst and the team leader of the company's Search Relations according to his official LinkedIn profile. The statement came as a reply to a Reddit post asking for SEO tips regarding ranking on Google or the use of AI articles.
AI-Generated Content Gets Rehashed from Other Sites
According to the Senio Search Analyst on a Reddit thread, it was noted that should people use AI in order to write their content, the result will be that their content would get rehashed from other sites.
The explanation as per SE Roundtable notes that AI learns from things online and uses already available knowledge in order to write based on what's available. Because of this, the search engine would rehash things it already knows and make something new with the help of that knowledge.
Google Doesn't Mind AI Content as Long as It's Just for People, Not Search Engines
However, the knowledge still isn't new since it basically comes from the information readily available online. As noted, Google doesn't mind sites that are creating AI content that are directed toward people but the same cannot be said when it comes to content for search engines.
On the Reddit thread, John Mueller clarified how Google approaches AI-generated content. He noted that while great content won't automatically rank well, content that is terrible will find it much harder to rank.
Technical Detail Don't Apply to sites with a Clear Purpose
Because of that SE Roundtable says that it isn't enough to just have great content anymore. Mueller explained that for search engines to link to a certain site, the site has to provide something not given by other sites.
This means if AI is being used to write content, it automatically gets rehashed from other sites. He then clarified that the technical details don't apply when a site itself doesn't serve a particular purpose.
