As a popular choice for item tracking, Apple's AirTag is relied upon by many to monitor their belongings. However, a recent incident in Canada demonstrates that the outcome isn't always as expected.
This photo illustration taken on February 13, 2023 shows an Apple Air Tag in Washington, DC. Originally designed as a solution for the absent-minded, the AirTag digital tracking button is also sometimes employed for a more sinister function.
Tracking Gone Wrong
Becca Hislop placed an AirTag in her vehicle, as per a report from Phone Arena. When her car was stolen near Science World in Vancouver on a Sunday morning, she took it upon herself to respond. The tracker indicated her car's movement through the city, getting caught in downtown traffic.
The following day, Hislop opted to pursue the AirTag's signal, leading her to a winery in Kelowna. However, the story didn't conclude there, revealing the tech-savvy nature of the thieves.
Given the increasing number of incidents where AirTags have helped recover stolen items and the NYPD's distribution of the devices to deter car thefts, it's likely that criminals are now more alert than ever to potential tracking attempts. After all, no one welcomes the feeling of being constantly observed.
The thieves, aware of the AirTag, cleverly affixed it to a vehicle from the Evo Car Share rental service. Consequently, although the AirTag consistently provided its location, it led the owner astray, pointing in the wrong direction.
Recovering the Car
Criminals have grown increasingly vigilant against potential tracking efforts. Although she couldn't utilize AirTag to monitor her car during its theft, Global News reported that the Vancouver police eventually managed to locate it, with minimal harm. Meanwhile, the vehicle was en route to East Hastings Street.
Hislop ultimately contacted the Vancouver police, leading to the successful retrieval of the car, albeit with minor damages. Voicing her feelings, Hislop conveyed that she hopes that karma catches up with the person responsible. Hard work goes into acquiring possessions, and it's unjust for certain individuals to believe they can deceive and simply take.
Similar Incidents
Similarly, Apple Insider reported four individuals faced charges for carjacking and the subsequent death of the driver. This unfortunate event occurred after the victim attempted to reclaim the vehicle utilizing AirTag technology.
Another alarming occurrence took place in April, where the owners of a truck chose to pursue their stolen vehicle instead of waiting for police intervention. This decision led to a dangerous shootout, ultimately resulting in the alleged thief's demise within the vehicle.
While not resulting in fatalities, a New York man experienced a distressing outcome in August 2022 when he managed to track down his stolen motorbike using AirTags. However, his effort concluded with a broken nose, highlighting the potential risks associated with such actions.

Tragic outcomes, including fatalities and severe injuries, have resulted from such encounters in the past, underscoring the need for caution and restraint when faced with similar circumstances.
