There's a revolutionary software in the market that aims to improve our well-being while we work. Zen, the posture correction software developed by Zen (PostureHealth Inc.), uses cutting-edge technology and artificial intelligence to help users monitor and enhance their posture during long hours in front of a computer. In this exclusive interview, we sit down with the innovative mind behind Zen, Ion-Alexandru Secara, to learn more about his journey as an entrepreneur and the vision behind this game-changing product.
Q. Tell us about your entrepreneurial journey.
A. My journey as an entrepreneur began with a personal problem - bad posture. Since a young age, I spent a considerable amount of time working at a computer desk, which eventually led to a slightly hunched back. To combat this issue, I diligently followed an exercise and stretching routine. However, during my university years and internships at Adobe and Intuit, I realized that my posture suffered whenever I deviated from my routine, even momentarily.
Inspiration struck when I found myself in a computer lab, surrounded by computers equipped with webcams. It dawned on me that I could create an app that uses the computer's webcam to assess and correct my posture while I work. That's how the first iteration of Zen came to life.
I'm fueled by the knowledge that I'm working on something that has genuinely improved my life, and the feedback from our customers who share their stories of how Zen has positively impacted their health and well-being drives me every day.
Q. What is Zen's business plan?
A. At Zen, we're focused on creating posture correction software. Initially we developed a computer application that utilizes the built-in or attached camera and artificial intelligence to assess posture in real-time. Our second product is a mobile app that uses your AirPods to assess posture in real-time, while offering content, such as personalized educational classes and exercise programs. Our goal is to help free people of any pain, starting with posture.
Our customer base is diverse. We collaborate with enterprises like Brex, who offer Zen as a valuable benefit to their employees. Additionally, we have individual consumers who subscribe to our monthly or yearly plans.
Q. What is your most significant achievement as a business owner so far?
A. It's difficult to pinpoint a single achievement, but one that stands out is a feedback session with a customer who shared a remarkable result. Zen managed to alleviate her back pain significantly, surpassing the results achieved with two physical therapists. Hearing such positive feedback and knowing that we're making a tangible difference in people's lives is incredibly rewarding.
Q: What was one of the hardest times you went through since starting Zen?
A: One of the most challenging periods for me was during the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the restrictions and safety concerns, I had to make the difficult decision to not see my family for two years. It was emotionally taxing, but I knew that staying focused on Zen's mission and serving our customers was crucial during these unprecedented times.
Q: What's one book you'd recommend to our readers?
A: I highly recommend "Hacking Growth" by Sean Ellis. This book provides valuable insights into how to fuel rapid business growth through innovative and data-driven marketing strategies. It's a must-read for aspiring entrepreneurs and those looking to scale their businesses effectively.
