Instagram has rolled out a highly anticipated update that addresses one of the platform's most requested features - the ability to control who can send direct messages (DMs).
TechCrunch reports that the update, which had been in testing for some time, is now available to all Instagram users, bringing new restrictions to DM requests and enhancing user safety and control.
Limiting DM Requests
Instagram has taken initiatives with the new update to prevent users from receiving unwanted DM requests from strangers or accounts they do not follow.
Prior to this update, users were vulnerable to receiving multiple and persistent DM requests, which frequently resulted in spam or inappropriate content in their inboxes.
However, under the new restrictions, users can only get one DM request from an account they do not follow. They can continue to communicate via DMs once they accept the request.
This move is expected to significantly reduce unsolicited messages and enhance the overall Instagram experience for users who value their privacy and want to avoid unnecessary distractions.
Text-Only DM Invites for Enhanced Safety
Another key element of the update is the restriction on DM invites. Previously, users could send images, videos, or voice notes along with their DM requests, making it easier for strangers to send unsolicited and potentially harmful content.
Now, DM invites are limited to text-only until the recipient accepts the request to chat.
By removing the ability to send multimedia content before establishing a connection, Instagram aims to prevent strangers from bombarding users with offensive or inappropriate media.
This step is crucial in fostering a safer environment for everyone, especially female users who have often been targets of unwanted explicit content.
Empowering Users with the "Restrict" Setting
In addition to the DM request restrictions, PhoneArena tells us that Instagram has introduced the "Restrict" setting, providing users with a powerful tool to monitor and manage unwanted interactions. This feature allows users to maintain control without completely blocking an account.
Once a user restricts an account, comments left by that account on their posts become visible only to the restricted account. Any harmful or offensive comments are effectively hidden from the public eye, offering protection against bullying and harassment.
Moreover, any DMs sent by the restricted account are automatically directed to the DM requests folder, away from the main inbox.
This subtle yet effective approach gives users the power to safeguard their online experience while maintaining a level of engagement that they are comfortable with. It balances completely blocking an account and enduring unwanted attention, granting users greater control over their interactions on the platform.
Implementing these new features is a testament to Instagram's commitment to user safety and well-being. Cindy Southworth, the head of Women's Safety at Meta, the parent company of Instagram, stated, "We want people to feel confident and in control when they open their inbox... We're grateful for the feedback we hear from our community - and we'll keep listening to find ways to help everyone feel safer on Instagram."
