A stunning discovery was unearthed by students from the Barraeca II Professional School of the City Council, finding a complete and preserved mosaic of the mythical gorgon, Medusa. The discovery was believed to be from an Ancient Roman-era home in Huerta de Otero site in Mérida, Spain, including other ancient finds in the area.
More ancient discoveries were unearthed here, and it gave a better understanding of the socio-cultural arts of the early days, primarily based on the Roman era.
Complete Medusa Mosaic Found in Spain by Students
According to the team's press release, the recent excavation on the Huerta de Otero site has given the researchers a lot to know about the ancient culture of the region. One of the most interesting discoveries here is the complete and preserved mosaic of Greek mythology's most famous gorgon, Medusa.
This discovery is also worth noting to have been found by student workers, a massive find for their quest to uncover more of what was buried underneath.
"We are very interested in valuing new archaeological sites and hence, with the specialty of specialized workers in Heritage, Archaeological Excavations, and Construction of the Barraeca II Dual Professional School, which began in September last year, it has been excavated in the Huerta de Otero with these great results," emphasizes the delegate of training and archaeological heritage, Pilar Amor.
Other Themes, Representations in Mosaic Art
However, it is not only Medusa that was discovered here.
Félix Palma, director of the Monumental City Consortium, this site "is exceptional because of the level of conservation that the remains have and, above all, because of the ornamental apparatus that decorates the house so well preserved: not only the mosaic of the jellyfish but also paintings and sculptural motifs."
Ancient Discoveries that Explain Culture
The world of the past is distant from the present, but one of the most constant things here is the art, culture, and designs that influenced modern representations and developments now. Last month, the speculated theater owned by the renowned Emperor Nero was excavated near Vatican City in Rome, holding significant information about past entertainment.
It was not only in Rome or Egypt where people find ancient discoveries that bring more information about the past, as different countries and regions have special hidden secrets too. An ancient Spanish tomb is believed to have challenged the beliefs of gender roles from the past, with the so-called "Ivory Lady" treated in the past as an important figure.
While archaeologists and historians have already taught the world a lot in the many discoveries from before, there is still a lot to uncover regarding humans' early beginnings and culture. Not all are historical or are tied to influential people, with the latest Roman-era house in Spain featuring a detailed understanding of the previous culture, especially with mosaic art.
