In case you missed it, Twitter has recently undergone a major rebranding effort and is now officially known as "X."
This significant change is not just limited to the app's name but also includes updates to the iOS and Android versions.
Currently in beta, the new "X" app presents users with a fresh interface while eliminating all traces of the previous Twitter branding from its former offices.
Video Download Feature for "Blue" Subscribers
As part of this rebranding, "X" has introduced an enticing new feature exclusively available to its paid subscribers, known as "Blue" subscribers.
These privileged users now have the ability to download videos shared by other subscribers on the platform.
This feature is handy for content creators, journalists, and anyone who wishes to save videos for offline viewing or share them on other platforms.
Restrictions and Privacy Settings
While the video download feature opens up new possibilities for content consumption and creation, some critical restrictions remain.
To prevent potential misuse, the feature is only accessible for videos uploaded on or after July 25th. Additionally, video downloads are limited to verified users 18 years or older, ensuring that age-appropriate content is accessed.
Protecting Younger Users and Content Creators
Phone Arena notes that "X" is taking steps to safeguard its younger users and content creators. Users under 18 automatically have the video download setting turned off, and this cannot be altered.
Blue subscribers can disable video downloads for their videos on a tweet-by-tweet basis, offering them greater control over their content.
However, once the setting is applied, it becomes permanent, and the tweet would need to be deleted to prevent downloads.
Downloading Videos
For Blue subscribers, downloading videos from tweets is a straightforward process. Simply locate the desired video, tap the three dots in the top right corner of the tweet, and select "Download video."
This convenient feature enhances offline accessibility and facilitates seamless content sharing across other social media platforms.
Potential Legal Implications
With the option for Blue subscribers to upload videos up to two hours in length, The Verge notes that "X" must be cautious about copyright infringement issues.
Ensuring proper moderation and content monitoring is crucial to avoid any potential legal troubles arising from the misuse of copyrighted materials.
We reported in April that some users took advantage of Twitter's updated feature, which allows subscribers to upload video files up to 60 minutes long in 1080p resolution and 2GB file size - uploading the entire 'Super Mario Bros. Movie.'
Comparison with Competing Platforms
By introducing video downloads, "X" aligns itself more closely with other short-form social media networks like TikTok and Instagram, which have long offered users the ability to download and save videos.
This move aims to increase user engagement and keep "X" relevant in an ever-evolving social media landscape.
Additional Video Features
Alongside the new video download capability, "X" provides users with several other features.
These include docking a video, sending videos via Direct Messages, and certain limitations on video resolution and aspect ratios.
