Rumors are circulating that Apple may be considering the use of 3D printing technology for its upcoming devices, particularly the next version of the Apple Watch.
Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst with TF International Securities, shared his findings in a blog post, indicating that Apple is actively exploring the adoption of 3D printing for some of the titanium mechanical parts in the forthcoming Apple Watch Ultra.
Will Apple 3D Print Next-gen Devices?
"My latest survey indicates that Apple is actively adopting 3D printing technology, and it's expected that some of the titanium mechanical parts of the 2H23 new Apple Watch Ultra will be made by 3D printing," Kuo said in a blog post.
According to Kuo's statement, while mechanical parts produced through 3D printing still require additional processing through computer numerical control (CNC), the utilization of 3D printing can enhance production time and reduce manufacturing costs.
This move toward 3D printing may align with Apple's continuous efforts to improve production efficiency and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance within its supply chain.
Regarding the supply chain for 3D printers used to manufacture mechanical components for the Apple Watch Ultra, IPG Photonics is identified as the exclusive supplier of laser components, while Farsoon and BLT are the printer suppliers.
Kuo speculates that if the shipments progress successfully, other Apple products may also adopt 3D printing technology in the future, resulting in further production cost improvements and ESG enhancements throughout Apple's supply chain.
