Instagram and Messenger users can now use their Meta avatars to answer and make video calls as the company introduced a way to go on-cam without necessarily being seen.
As announced earlier today, users can now opt to showcase their Meta avatars on video calls using the two social media apps of the company.
While this may sound like something pulled out from the metaverse, it is, as virtual avatars are now paving the way for a revolutionary video-calling experience.
Meta Avatars for Video Calls Are Now Available for Instagram, Messenger
If you are currently preoccupied, not quite ready for an on-camera conversation, or simply because you do not feel like being seen, Meta's "Avatar Calling" feature is for you.
Meta brings a new experience for Messenger and Instagram users using video calls made on iOS and Android apps. Instead of the app showing your live image using your smartphone's front or back camera, Avatar Calling would put a proxy in for you to face your friends, family, or colleagues.
However, this still works as a regular video call in which you have to go on-camera as the avatars capture one's expressions and motions in real-time. It is accessible on the on-screen tabs on the left-hand side under "Avatars."
Here's How to Make Your Meta Avatar for Your Virtual Presence
Meta's Avatars have introduced many customization features in the past, but not everyone has made one. However, creating your Meta Avatar may take the video-calling experience to a whole new level with your signature style.
To create an avatar, head to the Facebook app and click on the icon consisting of three vertically stacked lines (hamburger menu). Next, scroll down to Avatars and get creative.
Meta's Social Media and the Metaverse
Social media platforms are, first and foremost, a virtual experience, allowing people to connect to their local communities and other users worldwide instantly.
Social media has paved the way for expanding more of the virtual world, with Meta also introducing avatars for Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram.
These avatars resemble the ones from Horizon Worlds, Meta's first step into the metaverse, featuring a new virtual experience that offers social and entertainment experiences in it.
However, it is still unknown if Meta will continue developing the metaverse, especially with Reality Labs losing $3 billion in Q1 2022 alone. However, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is still hopeful for it.
The metaverse is the emerging 3D-enabled digital space that uses augmented reality and virtual reality to allow the public to have lifelike personal and business experiences online.
Meta is expanding, and the company is highly regarded for its recent releases, including the Instagram text-based app Threads. Despite the new app, Messenger and Instagram are still catching up.
The latest avatar feature for video calls on these two social media platforms offers a way to appear on calls without letting anyone see your live image. This latest update will make your avatar more fun, useful, and social than ever before.
