Nothing Phone (2) launched earlier today, delivering the latest take of the company for its unique smartphone, but when its tech CEO Carl Pei was asked about a future foldable phone, he turned it down immediately. The rest of the world and different companies are ecstatic about foldable smartphones being one of the most advanced devices yet, but it seems like Carl Pei is not on this bandwagon.
The interview's outcome only reflects Nothing and Carl Pei's current priorities, and it seems that it would stick with the flat and standard smartphone for its deliveries.
Carl Pei's Nothing is Not Invested in Foldable Smartphones
According to an interview via IndiaToday, Carl Pei and Nothing are not looking to create or develop foldable smartphones "anytime soon," as per the latest interview with the tech CEO.
Pei has been critical about the tech industry's releases in the past five years, saying that the different companies now have gotten "very incremental" in the small tweaks they bring to modern smartphones. Talking about the development, Pei criticized the entirety of the industry which apparently, is only delivering minimal changes to devices.
"If you look at how the foldables are evolving, they're all the same again."
Pei added that "If you don't see the logo, I don't think a consumer can tell them apart."
Carl Pei Thinks Foldables Are a 'Niche'
According to Android Authority, Pei thinks that foldable smartphones are a "niche," with the device only catering to specific needs and wants of a consumer, but not an option for all.
Nothing Phone (2) recently arrived in the market with flagship specs, featuring a processor worthy of this branding, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. Preorders are already available after its recent launch, with Monday, July 17, bringing the phones directly to the market.
Nothing Phones in the Market
One would think that the smartphone industry is already saturated and features multiple companies that bring their developments, but Nothing changed when it was first established in 2021. The startup is only more than two years old and it already managed to be one of the most sought-after smartphones in the US, especially as the region did not see a release of the Nothing Phone (1).
With people craving more from the interesting features, the Nothing OS, its different UI, and other offers of the device, Nothing shot straight to fame with what it has to offer.
Not only that, the company also brought its version of a Nothing wireless earbuds to the market which is relatively more affordable but is on par with different tech accessories.
Nothing Phone (2)'s release was met with enthusiasm especially here in the US as it would be the first time that it would arrive in the region, leaving fans and enthusiasts craving for it. However, in Pei's recent interview, we might already see a glimpse of the future where it would focus on flat devices to offer, as the company is not invested in developing a foldable anytime soon.
