The latest development in Google's self-designed chips, the Tensor lineup, was reportedly looking at a delay that would set it back until 2025 for its next delivery for the Pixel devices. As per the reports, Google missed its production deadlines for the fourth-generation Tensor chips, and with this, it will continue to use the semi-modified Samsung Exynos for its mobile devices.
"Redondo" is the next-gen Tensor chip from Google meant for a 2024 release, but after these issues, it is speculated to arrive by 2025.
Google Faces Delays in Developing its Tensor Chips to 2025, Laguna Chip
The Information reported that Google was planning to replace its Samsung Exynos-modified chips that it currently uses in its Pixel smartphones by 2024, with a chip codenamed "Redondo." However, certain delays may not have it in time, and Google is now allegedly pushing back its release to a later year, by 2025.
Google will skip the Redondo development as well, and while it gathers its efforts for future chip development, the company would move on over to its plans for 2025 with the chip called "Laguna." As per the Google executive who confirmed this information, the company's US and India teams are to blame for its delays.
Google to Still Use Samsung's Exynos, TSMC Partnership Soon?
According to The Verge, Google will use Samsung's chips that were semi-customized for their devices for now but would not remain with the South Korean company's chip development for long.
It is also working on sealing a deal with TSMC for its 3nm processors, to use for the future Tensor. However, Apple already reserved 90 percent of its manufacturing for its needs.
Still, Google is looking to also get the special development of TSMC which produces thin chips that are capable of powerful performance and outputs.
Google and its Tensor Development
Google first introduced the Tensor chip to the world back in 2021, and it first made its debut with the Pixel 6 lineup which gave it a newfound power for all of its processes. It was iconic for Google to move away from Qualcomm's Snapdragon lineup, the chips it used for older Pixel phones, with the Tensor bringing in a significant development to its offers.
Still, there are massive plans from Google to expand more of what the Tensor brings to the public, especially with the arrival of the Tensor G2 with the Pixel 7 series from last year.
Samsung is the manufacturer of the Tensor chips, and it is set to bring the next-gen release, the Tensor G3 with a 4nm process that is similar to what TSMC brought for Apple.
Soon, Google will also tap into TSMC's development for its next-gen processor, the 3nm manufacturing process for its Laguna chip, a.k.a. the Tensor G5. With that, Google may skip the Redondo chip for next year's set of Pixel devices to arrive, with the company also looking to leave its partnership with Samsung and join Apple with TSMC.
