Meta Threads App: Instagram Head Says ActivityPub Support Won't Be Available at Launch

The dedicated protocol for Meta's Threads app is nowhere to be seen at launch.

With Twitter slowly crumbling down as an established social media platform, Meta took the opportunity to roll out its Threads app, the closest rival that will compete with Elon Musk's app.

Although briefly made available on the web before being pulled, Threads offered users a unique experience of reading posts without requiring an account, a departure from Twitter's current setup.

Twitter's rate limits have infuriated many users who regularly use the app daily. Because of this, some people think that migrating to another platform will solve their problems.

Notably, Meta's Instagram head, Adam Mosseri, revealed that Threads will not support ActivityPub at its launch, according to TechCrunch on Wednesday, July 5.

For those unfamiliar with this support, ActivityPub is a protocol used for decentralized networks like Mastodon. However, Meta intends to incorporate interactions with other fediverse servers in the future.

By tapping on the threads.net button next to a user's profile, Threads users will eventually be able to engage with individuals on other fediverse platforms. This expansion aims to foster a more connected and inclusive social media experience.

Meta Still Plans to Launch ActivityPub in the Future

Mosseri highlighted the team's commitment to implementing ActivityPub support into Threads, acknowledging the importance of an open and decentralized network.

Although the support could not be completed for the platform's launch due to complexities associated with decentralized networks, Meta plans to introduce this functionality in the future. This commitment allows users to maintain their audience and connections even if they decide to leave Threads or face de-platforming, ensuring a seamless transition to other servers.

Famous Personalities Are Enjoying Meta's Threads So Far

As spotted by Yahoo, renowned figures like Mark Zuckerberg, Adam Mosseri, iJustine, and Formula 1 driver Lando Norris, along with brands like Netflix, have already started posting on Threads, attracting a significant number of followers.

Currently, users can view posts, profiles, and share links, while the platform's user-friendly interface offers a light or dark theme toggle for a personalized experience. Additionally, Mosseri announced that Threads will provide users with control over post replies, enabling them to choose between everyone, profiles they follow, or mentioned accounts.

Meta's Threads Won't Launch in Europe

Unfortunately, Threads will not launch in the European Union (EU) initially due to privacy concerns raised by Ireland's data regulator. Users on other platforms have already expressed apprehension about the amount of data collected by the app, as indicated by the data labels on the App Store.

In another related report from Tech Times, the tech giant reportedly lost a legal battle against the German competition regulators. With the decision of the EU's Court of Justice, Meta's ad-focused business model will face limitations.
