Reddit Protests Are Not Yet Over: App Store Sees 1-Star Reviews Complaining About New API

The API changes are taking a toll on Reddit.

The public's online protests against Reddit are still continuous, and it seems that they would not let up anytime soon, as users are now flooding the Apple App Store to give the app a 1-star rating on their reviews. Not only that, but they are also vocal about their comments, citing the new happenings because of the third-party apps that departed.

Its root cause is still the changes on Reddit's API, with its new policies charging developers with massive rates that resulted in the shutdown of services including Apollo.

According to TechCrunch, different analysis firms reported the latest changes in Reddit's online presence, and one significant drop was from its Apple App Store ratings, leaving a 1-star review for the iOS app. Redditors also did not hold back in expressing their frustrations on the API changes, using the App Store's comments section to add more information.

Sensor Tower provided the data on the recent App Store reviews, saying that "There has been some rating improvement lately as the 1-star reviews of the Reddit U.S. iOS app dropped to about 86% between June 15-26, Sensor Tower's data shows."

Apple's 1-star rating for the App Store is the lowest score that users may give an app, but this is presumably because there are no zero-star ratings available.

The Redditors are Bringing the Fight Everywhere

9to5 Mac reported that the Redditors are making their voices heard with the low ratings on the App Store, bringing their fight to different platforms apart from the famed Reddit blackout earlier this June.

Most keywords included in their comments talk about "Apollo," "Third-party," and "3rd party" which further confirms that this is in line with the public's protest against the company's changes.

Reddit's API Changes

Its massive decision to push through with the API changes is something that Reddit CEO Steve Huffman fully supports, with the leader defending the company's decision for it. Their goal is to improve Reddit itself with better tools and features that would no longer need third-party apps like the ones before.

The CEO's decision is firm, and despite being asked about offering more fair pricing, he stood firm on what the new policy brings to all developers.

Soon began the Reddit protests where many subreddits and communities went dark on the platform to make their voices and pleas heard. This led to the social news aggregator website facing an outage, with some pledging 48 hours to as much as an indefinite timeline before their return.

The Reddit crash in the past weeks was not a big deal for the platform, and it remains firm on its decision for the new API policy that charges significantly for the developers' access. Still, Redditors are not letting up, and their way of making their voices heard is via the Apple App Store's reviews, leaving a 1-star review as there are no zero stars.
