TikTok Drops BeReal Copy 'TikTok Now': Why the Sudden Change?

TikTok adapts to changing trends.

TikTok, the popular social media platform, has announced discontinuing its BeReal-like feature called TikTok Now.

As PhoneArena reports, users have been receiving notifications informing them about the removal of TikTok Now and encouraging them to continue sharing their creativity on TikTok through videos, photos, and stories.

This move comes as BeReal, the original app that inspired TikTok Now, has experienced a decline in popularity.

TikTok Drops BeReal-like Feature

TikTok Now was launched in September 2022 as a response to the success of BeReal, an app primarily used by Generation Z users.

The concept behind BeReal revolves around capturing spontaneous and authentic moments by taking immediate photos with both the front and rear cameras within a two-minute time window.

TikTok Now operated similarly but with minor tweaks, allowing users to post 10-second videos instead of just photos and providing the option to show instant posts only to friends.

However, the similarities between the two apps have led to TikTok Now's decline.

BeReal's Decline

BeReal gained popularity among Zoomers who sought a break from superficial social media networks, offering them a platform to share unscripted and ordinary moments.

However, this emphasis on authenticity also led to privacy concerns, as users would capture anything and everything in their surroundings without much consideration.

This raised issues related to business and even state privacy. While BeReal claimed to have 20 million daily active users, there has been a significant drop in its user base, with reports of a 61% decrease in daily active BeReal users.

The decline in user numbers and privacy concerns have contributed to BeReal's diminishing popularity.

What's In the News

TikTok's decision to discontinue TikTok Now reflects the decline of BeReal and the changing preferences of social media users.

While TikTok Now aimed to replicate BeReal's success, it ultimately failed to sustain its user base. The discontinuation of TikTok Now highlights the competitive nature of social media platforms, with companies frequently incorporating features from popular apps to maintain their dominance.

As the viral spotlight moves on, it remains to be seen how TikTok and other social media platforms will continue to evolve and adapt to their users' changing trends and demands.
