The viral news about the Titanic tourist submersible is all over the headlines of several publications and TV reports.
While the search-and-rescue operation is ongoing for the missing passengers onboard the sub, some people on Polymarket are betting if they are still alive after the tragedy.
Betting Cash on the Fate of Titanic Tourish Sub Passengers
It's not unusual to stake a huge amount of money in a basketball or any sports-related parlay, especially with the abundance of online betting sites everywhere. However, it's just strange to imagine if someone is betting some bucks whether the missing ship will be retrieved before a particular date—it's a matter of life and death.
As Gizmodo reported on Thursday, June 22, over $120,000 are included in a major bet on Polymarket, a popular online prediction marketplace.
The majority of the bettors believe that the Titanic submersible won't be found before Friday, June 23. The total bet in this category already reached $107,000.
For the past week, the news about the Titanic exploration submersible sent shockwaves to the global audience when viewers discovered the potential casualties in the accident.
As the experts said, the supply of oxygen for the five passengers is only good for four days. By the time it reaches the fifth day, there's a chance that the people inside will be gasping for air and thus declared dead later.
"For the purposes of this market, the vessel need not have been rescued or physically recovered to be considered 'found.' If pieces are located, but not the cabin which contains the vessel's passengers, that will not suffice for this market to resolve to 'Yes.'" Gizmodo reached out to Polymarket for comment on Thursday morning but did not immediately receive a response" a description page in Polymarket reads.
Regarding the supply of oxygen, U.S. Coast Guard Rear Adm. John Mauger did not comment on whether there's still remaining oxygen in the tank and how much is left.
Polymarket Betting on Titan Sub is Morally and Ethically Wrong
There's nothing wrong in earning money from betting if the money that you're using is just from your surplus. However, it should be noted that crypto waging for someone who is fighting for his/her life can be disgusting to hear.
According to Protos, some people said that cashing out on the potential fate of billionaires onboard shouldn't be done in the first place. Several communities expressed their disappointment over the news since it sparks moral and ethical dilemmas.
The crypto industry might have garnered much-needed attention from the public through betting on the missing Titan sub, but still, it does not sound good for others who value human life.
Earlier, Tech Times reported that rescuers detected underwater noises while searching for the Titan submersible that sank at the bottom. It's not yet clear if they came from the passengers documenting the Titanic wreckage.
