Korea's spy agency, the National Intelligence Service (NIS), is set to unveil security guidelines for the use of ChatGPT and other AI chatbots, addressing concerns surrounding the technology, according to a report by The Korea Times.
NIS Set to Release AI Guidelines
The NIS plans to release the guidelines to government departments and agencies this month, following a project initiated in April in collaboration with experts in the field. The aim is to harness the benefits of AI technology while minimizing potential complications.
The primary concerns surrounding AI chatbots include the leakage of personal or work-related information and the spread of realistic "fake news."
Despite its flaws and limitations, AI technology has proven useful in various domains, prompting a mix of expectations and worries about its impact on daily life.
Kwon Tae-kyoung, a scholar from Yonsei University involved in the project, emphasized the significance of developing security regulations alongside the technology itself. He stressed the importance of using AI technology within the framework of security policies.
The upcoming guidelines from the NIS will be continually updated to safeguard national interests from potential misuse of AI capabilities, including by those with malicious intent.
While several countries, such as Russia, China, and Cuba, have already banned the use of ChatGPT due to concerns over privacy, Italy temporarily imposed a ban before lifting it after OpenAI implemented the necessary changes to comply with Italian regulations.
Meanwhile, the US, the EU, and other countries are currently working to provide a legal framework that would govern AI.
