NASA Artemis 3 2025: Concerns on SpaceX's Starship May Delay it to 2026; Is It a Crucial Spacecraft?

NASA's Manager is now expressing his concerns on SpaceX's testing.

A deep concern from a NASA Manager is now echoing in SpaceX's development of its Starship rocket, particularly with its connection to the upcoming Artemis 3 launching in December 2025. It may be two years until the uncrewed mission to the Moon, but SpaceX will play a massive role in its low-Earth orbit business before it heads for the lunar surface.

CBS News reported the latest concerns on the Artemis mission came from the recent meeting with the Aeronautics and Space Engineering Board of the National Academies, with NASA's Jim Free addressing the board. Free is NASA's chief of exploration systems development, and he aired out his concerns about the future of the 2025 mission toward the lunar surface.

One of the most significant points he gave importance to is SpaceX's readiness for the Artemis 3, as the company was tasked to create the Human Landing System (HLS) for the mission. It is important to note that the HLS is a modified version of the Starship, which will bring astronauts from the Moon orbiter to its surface in less than two years.

Free said that he receives a lot of questions regarding the moon landing date and if the team would make it in time, and he said that these massive questions highly depend on SpaceX.

Starship Testing: Will it Make it In Time for Artemis?

Free further said that SpaceX has a "significant number" of launches to go for the Starship and Super Heavy Rocket, and it rides on the company to complete this for the agency to determine the future of Artemis 3.

Moreover, the NASA executive said that the December 2025 window may be pushed to 2026 if SpaceX does not make it in time.

NASA and the Artemis Mission

Last year saw the first outing of NASA's Artemis 1 mission, and it sent an uncrewed SLS Rocket and Orion spacecraft to the Moon and back, signifying the start of the return to the lunar surface. It was one highly successful mission as it managed to go on a round-trip flight towards the natural satellite, but its team said it had potential communication weaknesses amidst the trip.

Still, it was a significant milestone for the Artemis mission, as this was decades since the last venture of NASA and humanity to the Moon.

With that, there is another tech that has been under testing and development in time for the actual Moon mission that will come later in this decade and before 2030 arrives.

One of the key partners in the Moon mission is SpaceX, and there is a massive dependence relying on the Starship's success for the future of the Artemis. With NASA's Jim Free having significant concerns about the Artemis 3 mission by 2025, the goal is to have the Starship ready in time to achieve the original timeline set out for the humans' return to the Moon.
