Elon Musk's Twitter Hires NBCUniversal Executive Joe Benarroch

Elon Musk continues to shake up Twitter's top heads.

Elon Musk's Twitter has made a strategic move by hiring senior NBCUniversal executive Joe Benarroch as the tech mogul continues to change the social media platform's top team.

Benarroch is set to begin his role on Monday, June 5, where he will focus on business operations, bringing his extensive experience to Twitter's New York office, reported first by BBC.

This announcement comes less than a month after Twitter appointed Linda Yaccarino, the head of advertising at NBCUniversal, as its new chief executive. Yaccarino will assume the position currently held by Musk, who will still be involved with the company.

No Stranger to the Social Media Industry

Joe Benarroch, who previously served as the executive vice president for communications, advertising, and partnerships at NBCUniversal, is no stranger to the social media industry, having also worked at Facebook earlier in his career.

He expressed enthusiasm for his new role at Twitter, stating, "I am looking forward to bringing my experience to Twitter and working with the entire team to build Twitter 2.0 together."

Yaccarino took to Twitter to welcome Benarroch, saying, "Welcome to the flock @benarroch_joe! From one bird to the next." Her appointment as CEO marked a significant development in Twitter's leadership restructuring efforts.

The hiring of Benarroch follows the recent resignation of Ella Irwin, the second head of trust and safety under Elon Musk's ownership of Twitter.

Irwin assumed the position after her predecessor, Yoel Roth, left the company in November 2022, just a month after Musk acquired the company. The head of trust and safety plays a crucial role in content moderation, which has garnered increased attention since Musk took the Twitter reigns.

While the exact factors leading to Irwin's resignation remain undisclosed, her departure closely followed Elon Musk's public criticism of a content moderation choice made by Twitter.

As the new owner, Musk has been under pressure to identify a capable leader for the company, enabling him to shift his attention to his other endeavors, such as Tesla and SpaceX.

Fresh Era

The appointment of Linda Yaccarino as Twitter's new chief executive signifies the beginning of a fresh era for the platform.

Yaccarino will oversee the platform's business operations, while Musk will maintain his involvement as executive chairman and chief technology officer.

Irwin's resignation is the second occurrence of turnover in the head of trust and safety position since Musk's acquisition of Twitter.

During her tenure, Irwin defended the company under its new ownership, navigating a challenging period characterized by significant layoffs that reportedly led to advertisers leaving the platform.

As a spokesperson for the company, she provided insights into Twitter's policies and frequently engaged with reporters and users affected by account restrictions.

Ella Irwin confirmed her resignation to Reuters on Thursday, while Twitter and Musk have yet to comment on the matter. The exact reasons for her departure and the process of filling the vacant position as head of trust and safety remain unclear.

The decision regarding Irwin's replacement may ultimately rest with Twitter's newly appointed CEO, Linda Yaccarino.
