While the headlines surrounding mass layoffs might seem like a cause for concern, developers and engineers have enjoyed relative immunity across the board.
However, that doesn't mean they're content to sit back and remain within the confines of Web2 either-an increasing number of developers are shifting gears and honing the skills needed to pivot to a career in Web3.
For those leading the charge, the fields of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and blockchain underpin the sector, and because the space is still in the relatively early stages of development, it's ripe with career prospects.
A new way of thinking
Career advancement isn't the only thing motivating developers to make a move to Web3; finding a field that is more fulfilling is also fueling this shift.
"Web3 represents a new paradigm for the internet-one that is decentralized, transparent, and empowers users to take control of their own data and digital assets. This enables more equitable and sustainable business models through decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs), which give users and developers a say in how a project is run," suggests Lukas Schor, co-founder and head of ecosystems at asset management platform Safe.
He also proposes that as Web3 platforms champion open-source software development and collaboration beyond company borders, this is hugely attractive for developers who believe that by democratizing information, they can build more secure and accessible platforms.
Challenges to mass adoption
While the new frontier Web3 presents is an exciting opportunity for those working in software development, because it is still in the early stages of development, mass adoption is a long while off.
And because blockchain has up until this point mainly been concentrated around powering the crypto industry, for the average user, Web3 applications are currently too complex to navigate, something Schor hopes will change as smart accounts evolve and AI continues to innovate and improve.
"Technological advancement outside of the crypto industry will drive growth in Web3 adoption. In a world dominated by AI, there comes a need for better methods of verifying identity and provenance. Web3 identification software provides a much-needed solution for this issue," he says.
"That being said, I'm cautiously optimistic about mass adoption. We've definitely made significant strides in recent years, but we still have a long road ahead. I believe that as more developers and companies start building on existing infrastructure, and as more users become aware of the benefits of decentralized technologies, we will see a gradual shift towards a more Web3-based internet."
