A known Big Tech company is now looking to replace its human employees with technology, centering on artificial intelligence, with IBM revealing its plans to expand its workforce sometime in the future. The computer company may someday be putting its trust in thousands of AI to replace future 7,800 employees, to which it already froze hiring for new ones.
One of the biggest fears with AI's emergence is its capability to replace humans in their jobs, and with several companies, this is already the case, but only on a small-scale change.
IBM to Bring AI Workforce in the Future, Reveals Plans
Bloomberg's report details the recently revealed plans from IBM and its Chief Executive Officer, Arvind Krishna, who claimed that AI may replace its human workforce sometime in the future. This centers on the company's development of the system which it also offers as a service for other companies, centering on automation of their systems.
Krishna regarded that jobs that are vacated willingly would be the possible ones to face the change, further saying that "I could easily see 30 percent of that getting replaced by AI and automation over a five-year period."
Moreover, the executive claimed that most of the jobs that AI will replace will focus on back-office functions, pointing towards jobs in the Human Resources (HR) department. Certain tasks like providing employment verification letters or moving employees to different departments will see automation soon.
7,800 Openings will see Freeze Hiring on IBM
According to Ars Technica, IBM also revealed its plans to freeze its hiring on as many as 7,800 positions in the future, under its plans to feature AI as its workhorses in carrying the tasks once done by humans. This is already a massive possibility within IBM, and it is not only the reality for this company but for many more that are developing new technologies to automate positions from within.
AI Replacing Humans in Jobs
It may seem like a dystopian sci-fi show or movie, but artificial intelligence and machine-learning technology are rising to prominence and attracting companies to use the programs available for automation. Automation means that these systems will replace humans with the supposed jobs that they should be doing for a certain company, task, or service.
This can be seen in most automated processes now, like grammar checks or self-driving cars that use machine and deep learning to read the roads and transport a person from point A to B.
Still, OpenAI's OpenResearch division has recently published a study that details the company's findings regarding the jobs that AI cannot replace, with as many as 34 positions that are safe from the takeover.
AI's rapid growth and prominence that included it in almost all daily processes of humans, particularly with the emergence of chatbots powered by LLMs proved that the time of automation is close. IBM may not have set this yet on stone, but this is a significant move for the company, with a large number of openings that are supposedly for humans that may soon be given to AI.
