Nextdoor, the social networking platform that connects neighbors in the US, has announced its integration of generative AI technologies to enhance user experience.
In its first iteration, Nextdoor plans to experiment with new writing tools to facilitate communication among neighbors.
These new features, developed in collaboration with OpenAI, will leverage ChatGPT API to provide better suggestions and help users write more engaging posts.
New "Assistant' Feature
Nextdoor is currently experimenting with a new feature called "Assistant" to help neighbors write posts that will promote positive community engagement. The feature allows users to view a revised suggestion, which they can review and edit before posting.
The company is also testing generative AI applications that suggest alternative ways to phrase unkind comments and offer kinder revisions for comments that trigger a Kindness Reminder.
The goal of implementing these AI applications is to encourage more productive and engaging conversations both online and offline.
"Building on the foundations of our unique local knowledge graph, AI is already an integral part of the product experiences at Nextdoor," Kiran Prasad, Chief Product Officer of Nextdoor, said in a press release statement.
"Our goal is to bring neighbors together to create stronger and more connected communities. We are excited about the possibilities for generative AI applications to help us realize this objective by fostering kinder, more productive, and engaging conversations - both online and offline."
Generative AI Tools
Through the use of generative AI technologies, Nextdoor will also provide more personalized and relevant content to its users.
Nextdoor is utilizing the analysis of conversation topics and contexts to enhance the accuracy of content matching the needs and interests of neighbors. This process will enable the platform to provide more precise recommendations for local news, events, and activities to users.
Nextdoor's utilization of generative AI is in line with its mission to create a supportive environment where neighbors can rely on each other. The company intends to pursue testing generative AI models for unique applications that benefit both neighbors and businesses on the platform on a global scale.
To advance the incorporation of AI technology throughout the Nextdoor experience, the company said will hire skilled product leaders and engineers. It has a generative AI team headed by Qi He, a former LinkedIn employee who joined Nextdoor in 2022 after more than eight years at LinkedIn.
Nextdoor's integration of generative AI technologies is expected to provide a new way for neighbors to communicate positively and productively with one another.
The AI-driven features being tested by Nextdoor, such as the "Assistant" feature and the suggestions to rephrase unkind comments, aim to create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all users.
