Dr. Geoffrey Hinton, One of AI’s Leading Developers, Quits Google to Warn the World of its Dangers

The Godfather of AI wants to have special regulations for the tech.

The latest development for Google's AI is that it lost an influential figure in its ranks, a decade later after their first work together, as Dr. Geoffrey Hinton announced his resignation via an interview. However, Dr. Hinton's career is not yet at the end of the line, as he wants to take up the responsibility of warning the world about the dangers and risks of AI, especially in this age.

The present saw significant developments and features for generative AI as led by OpenAI and Google, and many are already going against this, also having the renowned "Godfather of AI," joining the charge.

Geoffrey Hinton Quits Google to Warn Against AI Dangers

Dr. Geoffrey Hinton, one of the most influential figures in the field of artificial intelligence, recently announced that he is leaving Google via an interview with The New York Times. Hinton joined Google in 2013 after the tech giant acquired his startup, DNNresearch.

Hinton's departure from Google is seen as a loss for the company, but it also signals a new chapter in his career. He is expected to continue working on AI research and development, with a renewed focus on addressing some of the ethical and societal issues surrounding the technology.

In the interview, Dr. Hinton said that he aims to speak freely regarding AI and its dangers, should it continue without international regulation and control of its development. This comes from the famed developer of machine learning who saw its potential and capabilities.

Who is Dr. Geoffrey Hinton and His Work on AI?

As early as 1972 saw Dr. Hinton's work on artificial intelligence, which greatly inspired generative AI developments. In 1987, Hilton and other developers introduced backpropagation, a renowned modern technique in training neural networks used until the present.

Hinton is known for his pioneering work in deep learning in 2012, which is a subfield of machine learning that focuses on training artificial neural networks to recognize patterns in data. His research has led to breakthroughs in speech recognition, image recognition, and natural language processing, among other areas.

Back in 2018, ACM presented Dr. Geoffrey Hinton with the Turing Award for his work on AI development and other contributions to the field.

AI Developments and Those that Oppose It

Hinton has also been a strong advocate for transparency and accountability in AI development, calling for more open research and collaboration between companies and researchers.

While Hinton speaks strongly against AI now, he was not part of the initial open letter to AI companies to stop its development after GPT-4, with known backers such as Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, and more.

Google is also one to lead the AI race, particularly with its new division, Google DeepMind, soon to debut its latest developments for all.

Dr. Geoffrey Hinton's departure from Google marks the end of a highly productive partnership between one of the world's leading AI researchers and one of the most innovative technology companies. However, it also represents an opportunity for Hinton to continue pushing the boundaries of AI development and addressing some of the ethical and social challenges that the technology poses.
