Meta Unveils New Avatar Customization with New Body Shapes, Clothing Textures, Collabs

The company has partnered with sportswear brand PUMA for new avatar clothing.

Meta, formerly known as Facebook, has announced that it is expanding customization options for its Meta Avatars. The move comes after the company surpassed what it calls a significant milestone: its technology has been used to produce over one billion avatars.

New Body Shapes Options for Avatars

The addition of new shape options is one of the major updates. Previously, the options available were relatively limited and uniform.

However, beginning this month, users will have access to a broader selection of body shape options, including two curvier body shapes.

According to the company, more options will be added over time to ensure that everyone can create an avatar that they enjoy and they feel best represent themselves.

This is a notable advancement for Meta, given that its universe's avatar was previously floating without legs. (The avatar legs were introduced in a 2022 Meta Connect event).

Meta Taps PUMA for Avatar Fashion

Meta has also partnered with sportswear brand PUMA to bring seven outfits to the Meta Avatars Store. This is in addition to outfits from other leading fashion, sports, and lifestyle brands already available in the store. Users will be able to purchase these outfits and dress up their avatars in the latest styles.

The company has also made some subtle changes to how avatars look. For example, it has added more sparkle to the eyes and made clothes look more realistic and textured. These changes will be visible when using the avatar outside of virtual reality.

Self-expression and representation are important, according to Meta, and the company is committed to ensuring that users can create avatars that feel like them. The new customization options are part of this effort.

However, it is worth noting that when users create an avatar and share it across Meta's platforms, such as Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, and VR, it will be visible to other people. The company advises users to learn more about controlling their avatar permissions.

Facebook Slammed for Ad Glitch

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, recently experienced one of the largest advertising glitches in over a decade, CNBC reports.

The glitch led to numerous companies funding Facebook ad campaigns that were essentially ineffective. While the issue has since been resolved, advertisers are concerned about receiving refunds from Meta due to the glitch.

Advertisers will undoubtedly be watching closely to see how Meta handles the situation and whether it will compensate affected companies.
