Proton Launches New Beta Password Manager With 'More Complete Encryption Model'

The LastPass hack last year has opened up doors for Proton to release a more competitive password manager.

Swiss firm Proton has announced its new product that competes with existing password managers.

The launch of Proton Pass prompts the use of end-to-end encryption so users can always secure their confidential information kept in storage, including their passwords, email, and bank account details.

Proton Launches Newest Password Manager With 'More Complete Encryption Model' in Beta Form
The company behind Proton Mail has released Proton Pass, the newest password manager in beta version. Proton

After seeing success with the launch of ProtonMail, the company's service focused on encrypted email, Proto has recently unveiled its password manager dubbed Proton Pass.

According to Engadget, the Proton Pass was made possible with SimpleLogin, which the company acquired back in 2022.

Proton Pass aims to be the best password manager when it comes to encryption. With an advanced set of security and privacy features in one product, it's no wonder that it can compete soon with other password managers.

What's more interesting about this product is that Proton's servers experience a data breach, your information is guaranteed to be safe since Proton has the user key.

"This is important because seemingly innocuous bits of information (such as saved URLs, which many other password managers don't encrypt) can be used to create a highly detailed profile on you. For example, if an attacker can see that you have passwords saved for an account with Grindr, gop.com, or even a manga fan site, they'll know a lot about you as a person, even if they can't actually access your accounts," Proton's founder and CEO Andy Yen wrote.

Lifetime Plan Subscribers Can Use Proto Pass Beta

As per TechCrunch's report on Thursday, April 20, loyal Proton customers who have the lifetime plan can now access the Proton Pass on its beta form.

The company said that the new customers wouldn't be able to use the Visionary Plan, but they could still access the password manager soon.

Just like Proton's other products, the password manager can come with different subscription tiers. Most likely, it can appear in the case of Proton Unlimited, which features premium features for paid users. Some of them are Proton Calendar, Proton VPN, Proton Mail, and Proton Drive.

LastPass Hack Paves Way For Other Password Managers to Thrive

With the controversial data breach that penetrated LastPass last year, some customers might be finding other alternatives that are free from these attempts.

The liability theft that impacted the leading password manager provider could have opened new opportunities for other companies to launch their own password managers.

As for Proton CEO Andy Yen, the whole organization has been worried about the security risks following the LastPass breach several months ago.

With this, the company will aim to roll out better updates for Proton Pass that will safeguard users from suspicious hackers and threat actors.
