The FBI arrested a 21-year-old IT specialist and national guardsman, Jack Teixeira, in Massachusetts on Thursday in connection with the leaking of highly classified military documents about the Ukraine war and other national security issues, according to a report by AP.
Classified Documents Leak
Teixeira will be charged with removing or disseminating classified national defense material, a violation under the Espionage Act, after FBI agents swooped on his residence without incident.
Although Attorney General Merrick Garland remained mum on Teixeira's potential motivations, others who participated in the online private chat room where the documents were made public have described him as being driven more by bravado than ideology, as noted by AP.
The military and Justice Department are still investigating how classified government information exchanged in a chat room ended up making its way across the world, even though the arrest was a turning point in an investigation into the most high-profile intelligence leak in years.
How such a significant breach, which the Pentagon described as a "very serious risk to national security," could have been initiated by a young person is still a mystery.
In a statement, House Intelligence Committee Republican Chairman Rep. Mike Turner promised to "examine why this happened, why it went unnoticed for weeks, and how to prevent future leaks."
Teixeira, who was detained by heavily armed tactical agents, is scheduled to make his first court appearance in Massachusetts on Friday. He might also be prosecuted in a military court if the charges against him were proven to be true.

What the Classified Documents Contain
The classified materials, none of which have been individually verified by US officials, range from briefing slides outlining Ukrainian military positions to evaluations of international support for Ukraine and other sensitive subjects, such as the potential use of nuclear weapons by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The exact amount of documents that were leaked is unknown. About 50 documents have been read by the Associated Press, although some estimates place the amount at hundreds.
The leak is thought to have started on Discord, a prominent social media site for gamers where Teixeira is known to have talked for years about firearms, video games, and his favorite memes - as well as, according to individuals who have chatted with him, highly classified US information.
The chat room, dubbed Thug Shaker Central, attracted nearly two dozen users who discussed their preferred types of firearms as well as jokes and memes, according to AP.
Teixeira's arrest is bound to raise questions about how America's most sensitive secrets could allegedly have been breached by a young person. The investigation is ongoing, and it is not clear if other suspects are being pursued.
