Steam Deck Gets New Windows Handheld Competitor: ROG Ally

Check out the new Steam Deck competitor.

Asus is entering a brave new world by introducing the ROG Ally, a handheld gaming PC set to challenge the likes of the Steam Deck, Ayaneo, and GPD. Officially announced on April 1st, many were skeptical - until Asus confirmed that the device was a reality.

Introducing the New ROG Ally: ASUS Joins the Pocket-Sized PC Revolution

As gamers are always looking for the perfect device to accompany their travels, ASUS is introducing a new handheld gaming PC to the market, the ROG Ally. ASUS looks to join the likes of Ayaneo and Valve in this pocket-sized PC experience enabling gamers to take their gaming with them anywhere they go.

According to the story by Engadget, to meet the demands of the modern gamer, ASUS has been light on the details but notes the system will run Windows 11 and features a custom AMD Ryzen chip. It will also be able to plug in an external GPU, though it's unclear how that might affect the device.

A 120 Hz Refresh Rate and Slim Design: Ensuring the ROG Ally Leads the Competition

To make the most of the handheld, the ROG Ally will also feature a 7-inch 16:9 ratio 1080p display that supports a 120 Hz refresh rate and weighs in at only slightly lighter than the already-existing Steam Deck, as explained further by The Verge. Battery life won't suffer, despite this, as the device has been designed to remain slim, narrow, and light.

To ensure the ROG Ally stays ahead of the competition, ASUS has chosen not to limit games on their system, effectively allowing gamers to run almost anything they need. This starkly contrasts with the Steam Deck, which is confined to various games.

On top of this, ASUS is a much bigger brand name than Ayaneo and GPD, meaning players can find the device much easier than other models. While ASUS is yet to release pricing details or a release date, fans can sign up for an alert at Best Buy and be the first to hear when the ROG Ally becomes available.

Time will tell if ASUS' entry into the pocket PC market lives up to the hype, with the pricing and performance having to stay competitive against already-existing models like the Steam Deck and Ayaneo 2.
