Not what it seems?

The herbal supplement, which is known to help alleviate symptoms of anxiety, has been used in Ayurvedic medicine to improve overall health, reduce pain and inflammation, and help with anxiety. Also referred to as the Indian Winter Cherry or Indian Ginseng, it seems that the herbal supplement isn't all the "good" it's supposed to be.

Many TikTok videos have resurfaced about the benefits of Ashwagandha and how it can help people with anxiety and depression. This has started a holistic trend in which herbal medicines are glorified that is, indeed, gaining a lot of traction over the years.

To even fuel its popularity, many videos on TikTok also affirm that the herbal supplement has changed their lives for the better when it comes to dealing with the effects of stress and anxiety.

However, not all TikTok users agree with this, as some videos have also started to resurface that are warning viewers of the possible side effects of the herbal supplement. Most of the videos state that users should be careful before they consume Ashwagandha as part of their regular routine.

Some say that Ashwagandha increases feelings of detachment, while others report dizziness and feeling more sleepy. Another TikTok video said that she didn't feel emotionally detached but nonchalant and mellow.

A research from 2019 that involved 60 participants who consumed 240mg of ashwagandha for 60 days and saw a decrease in cortisol levels, which is the main stress hormone.

Despite the small study about the supplement, it remains not to be a prescribed drug approved by the US FDA. Moreover, research is also still very limited. Hence, it's still best to consult with a medical professional before taking any herbal supplement or jumping in on the ashwagandha trend.

It is also important to note that the supplement may interact with some drugs or supplements, which could also be the reason some TikTokers feel negative side effects with it.

Sedatives, benzodiazepines, thyroid medication, immunosuppressants, diabetes medications, blood pressure medications or any other drugs or supplements that cause drowsiness may potentially not work well with ashwagandha. That's why it's still best to have a professional opinion before taking any herbal supplement, especially if you're taking other drugs and supplements.

The ashwagandha trend has gained traction in the wellness industry, with many supplements and products incorporating the herb into their formulations. It's also been featured in various health publications and has gained a following on social media.

While scientific research on the herb is limited, some studies have suggested that ashwagandha may have potential benefits for stress and anxiety relief, as well as improving cognitive function and reducing inflammation.

However, it's important to note that these studies are still preliminary, and more research is needed to fully understand the potential benefits and risks of ashwagandha. As with any supplement or natural remedy, it's important to consult with a healthcare professional before adding ashwagandha to your routine.
