YouTube TV Raises Monthly Subscription Prices to $73, Cites Rising Content Costs

Current members will be charged a higher rate beginning April 18.

YouTube TV has announced a price increase from $65 to $73 per month, citing rising content costs as the basis for the subscription price hike.

For new subscribers, the revised rates went into effect immediately, while current members will be charged the higher rate beginning April 18.

Everything to Know About YouTube TV's Recent Price Hike

YouTube TV said on Twitter, "As content costs have risen and we continue to invest in our quality of service," their monthly subscription would climb from $64.99 to $72.99, a rate untouched for three years.

But, new customers can save $10 on the first three months of the YouTube TV starter bundle. This means that for the first three months, new subscribers will pay $63 before the standard rate of $73 applies.

The streaming service additionally announced that the monthly fee for its 4K + upgrade would be reduced from $20 to $10. In the past, this service would set you back $20 monthly.

YouTube TV Answers User Queries

Twitter users have speculated that the price hike is related to the addition of NFL Sunday Ticket. However, YouTube has stated that the increase is due to the overall rise in the cost of content rather than the inclusion of Sunday Ticket.

CNET reports that Sunday Ticket will be an additional fee on top of YouTube TV, NFL Vice President of Media Strategy and Business Development Brent Lawton announced in December.

One customer considered canceling his YouTube TV subscription since he only watched a few channels. However, YouTube says it offers YouTube TV packages even to those who do not have a Base Plan. People can also look at YouTube Primetime Channels for more standalone offers, as said by YouTube.

Subscribers have been divided over YouTube TV's move to raise pricing. Some have resorted to social media to vent their frustration, while others say they understand why the prices have risen.

The decision comes as streaming providers continue to face escalating content costs. Streaming juggernauts like Netflix and Disney+ have also raised their fees in recent years in order to compete by investing in original content.
