The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a nasal spray from Pfizer to treat migraine, according to Interesting Engineering.
A press release by Pfizer states that the US FDA has finally approved their fast-acting nasal spray. The drug is named ZAVZPRET, which is expected to be available on the market starting July 2023.
Freedom From Migraine Pain?
The FDA approved ZAVZPRET based on two randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies to establish the drug's performance in treating acute migraines.
The results showed that the drug outperformed the placebo on two important measures-pain freedom and freedom from the most bothersome symptom after two hours of taking the drug.
Its Phase 3 study also showed that the drug has a wide-ranging efficacy with a statistical superiority to a placebo in 13 of 17 prespecified outcome measures.
ZAVZPRET offers an alternative treatment option for those who need pain relief or can't take oral medications due to nausea or vomiting. The drug will allow users to get back to normal immediately.
The Side Effects
The most common side effects observed in patients who used ZAVZPRET were taste disorders, nausea, nasal discomfort, and vomiting. These side effects were seen in at least two percent of patients and occurred more in patients who got the placebo.
It has also been noted that the drug is not allowed for patients with a known history of hypersensitivity to zavegepant or any of its components.
The Struggles of People Who Suffer From Frequent Migraines
People who suffer from frequent migraines have difficulty functioning in their daily lives. They may experience severe pain, nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and other symptoms. This can lead to difficulty concentrating, fatigue, and difficulty performing daily activities. People with chronic migraines may also struggle with depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues. Additionally, the cost of medications and treatments can be a burden. People with migraines may feel frustrated, overwhelmed, and isolated due to their condition.
Migraine sufferers may also experience difficulty sleeping due to their condition. This can lead to further fatigue and impair cognitive functioning, making it difficult for them to perform tasks that require concentration or focus.
People with chronic migraines may also have trouble maintaining relationships since they often need time alone during an episode or cannot participate in activities because of the pain and other symptoms associated with a migraine attack. Additionally, people suffering from frequent migraines may feel embarrassed about needing medication or treatments such as Botox injections which others could see as vanity procedures rather than medical necessities.
