Microsoft's Bing search engine has crossed a significant milestone, with the rollout of its new AI chatbot contributing to 100 million daily active users.
In a recent blog post, Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft's VP for Modern Life, Search, and Devices, revealed that Bing's user base had grown significantly, with one-third of daily active users new to the search engine.
This is excellent news for Microsoft, given Bing's current position in the search engine market. The company currently trails behind Google, which controls more than 93% of the market.
Good Sign for Bing
Mehdi also stated that the combination of search, answers, chat, and creation into a single experience had been Bing's unique value proposition.
The increase in users, engagement and searches has validated the new Bing's appeal as a reimagined search engine, as stated by the Microsoft executive.
Bing's increased engagement has been attributed to two factors. For starters, Edge usage has increased, aided by the addition of Bing's chat AI as a new feature. Microsoft finally phased out Internet Explorer in February and began promoting Edge as an alternative.
Second, with the introduction of its Prometheus AI model, Bing's search results have become more relevant. This has prompted more people to use or experiment with the search engine.
Microsoft explained in an official blog post that the new Prometheus model is its new proprietary technology that allows the company to capitalize on OpenAI's generative AI tech fully.
Growing Bing AI Search Engine Userbase
According to an Engadget report, Bing's chat AI has been quite successful, with approximately one-third of daily preview users using the chatbot to conduct their queries daily.
Microsoft is currently experiencing an average of three chats per session, with over 45 million chats taking place since the launch of the new Bing. People have used Bing to generate new content for approximately 15% of all chat sessions.
Microsoft also recognizes that the launch of Bing's AI chatbot on mobile has catapulted the search engine's popularity to new heights, resulting in a six-fold increase in daily active users from pre-launch levels.
Is Microsoft's Bing Overtaking Google?
Microsoft's Bing search engine now has a potent new tool at its disposal to help it compete with Google's portfolio.
Nevertheless, Google also has set its eyes on launching its very own chatbot, and the company just released a chat AI called Bard a month ago.
During its unofficial debut, Bard was found to be generating false information. This cast doubts on Google's AI-driven chatbot technology bid, costing the company $100 billion in market value. But is Bing's AI chat enough to overtake dominant players in the search engine market? Bing still has a long way to go.
Bing's chatbot AI's success demonstrates the growing demand for conversational interfaces in search engines.
Chatbots provide users a more conversational and personalized experience, making the search process easier and more efficient.
