Israeli Startup D-ID Launches Photorealistic AI App to Give Face, Voice to ChatGPT

This new web app gives a face and voice to OpenAI's ChatGPT.

Israeli startup D-ID, creators of Deep Nostalgia, has launched the beta version of their latest web application, chat.D-ID, according to a report by TechCrunch.

This application uses D-ID's text-to-video streaming technology and integrates OpenAI's ChatGPT to create an AI communication tool that appears in photorealistic form for a more accessible, face-to-face communication experience.

ChatGPT's Voice and Face

According to Gil Perry, D-ID's CEO and co-founder, the aim of chat.D-ID is to allow more people to use AI technology, even those who cannot read or write, by giving ChatGPT a voice and face.

Perry believes that face-to-face interaction is more effective and comfortable than communicating through text, and the addition of a face enhances the power of large language models.

The web app also targets the elderly population by making AI technology more user-friendly. Users are introduced to an avatar named "Alice," and can either type their queries or speak them out loud by clicking the microphone icon.

The application can respond to almost anything, including simulating a job interview or hosting a trivia night. Although the web app is still in the beta phase, it shows great promise for future AI communication tools.

According to Perry, the web app will soon provide multiple avatars for users to choose from and also allow them to upload any desired image, except for those of celebrities or public figures. In the upcoming weeks, users will be able to create a character and interact with it.

Perry emphasizes the importance of having a suitable face when conversing with AI, citing the example of an elementary school student using the app to learn about quantum physics and changing the face to Albert Einstein.

Free to Use

While chat.D-ID is currently free to use, Perry mentions that if the app becomes too overwhelming for the startup to handle, they may start charging users for it. However, D-ID is already prepared for the app to become popular, and the ultimate goal is to keep it free for users.

D-ID recently released a chat API for enterprises that allows for more personal and interactive customer experiences through text chatbots. This move comes just a week before the launch of their new consumer app.

D-ID sees this as an opportunity for brands to engage more effectively with their customers, as consumers are increasingly turning to chatbots for interacting with brands.

In addition to these new products, D-ID is participating in an industry-wide effort for ethical and responsible development, creation, and sharing of synthetic media.

This framework involves D-ID, Adobe, OpenAI, and other companies working together to ensure that synthetic media is developed responsibly and ethically.
