Sony PlayStation (PS5) sales are nearly double versus Microsoft's Xbox Series X/S gaming consoles, new data reveals.
It looks like the PS5 is now more popular among consumers compared to the current generation Xbox, as their sales performance suggests. Significantly more people are getting their hands on the PlayStation console.
Sony PS5 Sales
According to a report by ComicBook.com, the PS5 is the best-selling gaming console, as per the recent data of Ampere Analysis analyst Piers Harding-Rolls.
The PlayStation 5, one of the most popular gaming consoles out there, debuted last November 2020. And since then, gamers have continued patronizing the Sony console even during the time it had widespread supply shortage.
For its first two years, rare restocks in major retailers like Amazon and Best Buy seem like a massive event that buyers are looking forward to. Some consumers had to purchase the gaming console via scalpers for an insanely expensive price tag.
This time, the supply mess is pretty much improving, as more PS5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles are hitting the shelves. Restocks have become less exciting. But despite that, the Sony console still continues to lead the race in terms of sales.
Recent data claims that Sony has sold over 30 million units of PS5 gaming consoles in various parts of the world.
PS5 vs. Xbox Series X/S Sales
While the Sony PS5 takes the top spot, the gaming console of Microsoft, the Xbox Series X/S sits at the second rank.
However, the gap between the two is significant. ComicBook.com did the math. It turns out that the gap is roughly more than 10 million units.
Video Games Chronicles notes in its story that the Xbox Series X and Series S collectively sold roughly 18.5 million gaming consoles.
The popularity of the cheaper Series S amid the holiday craze helped improve the sales figures of Xbox. But it is still far away from the performance of the PS5.
Some might be surprised that the PS5 is doing better than the Xbox Series X/S. However, that might change as the year progresses.
Analyst Harding-Rolls says that Xbox sales are likely to better keep up in the first half of 2023 as the stocks of the Series X become more ubiquitous.
ComicBook.com highlights that the Japanese gaming firm Sony recently confirmed that the PS5 shortage is nearly over. So in the coming month, we might see more of it at various retailers.
