New viral TikTok face filters, such as the "bold glamour filter, are now generating millions of views on the social media platform.
Users who already tried these face filters shared their experiences, saying that the effects offer very realistic facial enhancements.
Some of them even said that the face filters' outputs are almost similar to the ones edited by Adobe Photoshop and other editing software.
While many people are astounded by these TikTok face filters, various health experts are concerned. Here's why.
Viral TikTok Face Filters Could Affect Mental Health
According to ABC News' latest report, these TikTok face filters can negatively affect people's mental health.
One of the health experts who are concerned is Lindsay Fleming, a therapist. She said that these TikTok effects can lead to psychological distress and other mental issues.
The therapist added that they can lead to poor body image perception in teenagers, as well as younger users. She further explained that these TikTok face filters could give a false sense of how people should look physically.
"We're getting people who are already struggling with how they feel about how they look and saying if you know how to do your makeup, you could look like this," said Fleming.
Will TikTok Fix This Problem?
As of writing, TikTok hasn't commented about the mental health risks posed by its face filters. But, Good Morning America reported that the social media giant is making efforts to diversify its platform.
This means that TikTok is ensuring that the content that users see in their For You Feeds are appropriate to them. For example, TikTok's FYP prevents adult-themed content from reaching young users, especially those below 17 years old.
