"Avatar 2: The Way of the Water" took home several Visual Effects awards during the 21st annual Visual Effects Society Awards 2023.
"The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" by Amazon Prime and "Pinocchio" by Guillermo del Toro won visual effects trophies in the annual awards.
'Avatar 2' Sweeps Major Visual Effects Awards
"Avatar: The Way of Water" hit theaters globally in December, a couple of years after the first Avatar movie premiered.
After the much-awaited debut of the sequel, it is now making strides in its stunning visual effects, taking home several awards at the Visual Effects Society Awards 2023.
According to Interesting Engineering, the former executive director of the Visual Effects Society, Eric Roth, pointed out the challenges that VFX artists are grappling with behind the scenes.
Roth notes that "this cannot be the model to get the most and the best out of such talented artists."
He goes on to say that "they are not faceless practitioners. They are your greatest assets."
Meanwhile, the chair of the Visual Effects Society, Lisa Cooke, notes that " we see best in class work that elevates the art of storytelling and exemplifies the spirit of adaptation and ingenuity - talents that have kept audiences engaged and uplifted, now, more than ever."
The "Avatar" sequel won the "Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature," as per a report by Variety.
The James Cameron film also took home the "Outstanding Animated Character in a Photoreal Feature" and "Outstanding Created Environment in a Photoreal Feature" awards.
The "Outstanding Virtual Cinematography in a CG Project" and "Outstanding Model in a Photoreal or Animated Project" awards also go to "Avatar 2."
The blockbuster movie also took home these visual effects awards: "Outstanding Compositing & Lighting in a Feature," "Outstanding Effects Simulations in a Photoreal Feature," and "Outstanding Special (Practical) Effects in a Photoreal Project."
All in all, "Avatar: The Way of the Water" won nine VFX awards.

'Avatar 2' Visual Effects Nominations
On top of that, the blockbuster sci-fi film of James Cameron received a record-breaking number of nominations in the annual awards, which focuses on VFX among films.
Interesting Engineering highlights that the sequel broke the previous record of the first "Avatar" film, which only got 11 nominations.
And besides that, it also dethroned the previous record holder of most nominations, "The Mandalorian" with 13 nominations.
