California's Angel Island Ferry to Launch as an EV in 2024

The 1975-built ferry vessel can carry 400 passengers.

One of the most popular ferry routes in the Bay Area will become electric. This will be the state's first electric short-hop ferry to launch in 2024.

Bay Area Commuters Hampered By Second Day Of Bay Bridge Closure
SAN FRANCISCO - OCTOBER 29: Commuters walk to the Golden Gate ferry during rush hour on October 29, 2009 in San Francisco, California. Thousands of Bay Area commuters were hampered by a second day of difficult commuting after the San Francisco Bay Bridge was abruptly closed the evening of October 27, when two steel tie rods and a crossbeam from a steel saddle broke and fell onto the upper deck of the bridge landing on three vehicles and causing one person to suffer injuries. No estimated time has been set for the bridge to reopen. The eastern span of the bridge is undergoing seismic renovation and is expect to be completed in 2013. The Angel Island Ferry is Going Electric

Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) and The Angel Island Ferry are collaborating to launch the first zero-emissions short-run ferry in California. According to a report from Engadget, PG&E will install charging infrastructure at the terminal to boost the electric transmission to the facility.

This will be a milestone not only for the Angel Island Ferry but also for PG&E's Electric Vehicle Fleet Program as they expand its support of transportation electrification to include vehicles in the marine sector. The 1975-built ferry vessel can carry 400 passengers.

PG&E Clean Energy Director Lydia Krefta stated that this partnership was an essential part of California's history and the tourism of the Bay Area as the vehicle carried thousands of visitors to Angel Island State Park for almost half of a century.

"For years, PG&E has been leading the way toward California's clean energy transportation future and supporting our customers as they electrify their vehicle fleets. This partnership marks a significant expansion of our resources beyond land-based electric vehicles, and it demonstrates how we deliver for our hometowns and in support of California's clean energy goals," she added.

This is also part of the company's efforts for California to be 100% zero-emission to support the Bay's natural environment and beautiful state park. Angel Island Owner and Operator Captain Maggie McDonogh commended PG&E's EV Fleet Program, as this plan would not be here if it were not for that.

She added that even small businesses like Angel Island could be part of the movement to reduce emissions in the state, which PG&E supports. As per Marine Log, PG&E helps medium and heavy-duty fleet customers quickly and cost-effectively install charging infrastructure through comprehensive construction and financial incentives.

Green Yachts

Aside from this, California's Green Yachts has also been selected to help with this project. The company states that they aim to decarbonize the marine sector and advance the electric revolution on the water.

Green Yachts is dedicated to helping convert the Angel Island Ferry to commercial and recreation vessels to electric propulsion as it will become the first authorized marine sector dealer in California's Clean Offread Equipment program.

Managing Broker Graham Balch stated that the electrification of the ferry would only be possible with a sufficient electrical supply for fast charging between ferry runs. He commended PG&E's efforts throughout this project.
